broken springs from handbrake assembly!

Just fitted 18" wheels with 18mm spacers, all ok but got a scraping noise on the l/h side, couldnt find if they were touching the struts etc so put the standard 17's back on.
There is still a scraping noise! but only from l/h side as with the 18" wheels! argh!!
Take the l/h side rear wheel off and i cant see anything catching?
Take caliper off, remove the disk and some pieces of spring fall out! (2 springs)
I'm assuming they are from the handbrake assembly???
here is a pic: http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/1323/springfy0.jpg
what are they for? managed to put the disk back on etc but just wondered what they for before i moved the car! :)
Can i temporarily remove the brake shoes from the l/h hand brake assembly as i would really like to use the car this weekend! No chance of getting any parts until next week etc!

I have removed the hand brake shoe so i can use the car this weekend until i get a new tension spring.
Will just have to leave it in gear when parking!

I've got the tensioner springs (number 6 on p140 of the pdf)
Help!
Does anyone know the correct set-up/installation procedure? I dont have a manual and i'm not 100% how it all goes together!
