Broken underbody studs

I need to fit a new rear undertray to my 1990 964 C4. On inspecting the underside I found that many of the short threaded studs for the plastic nuts for retaining undertrays and side skirts were snapped and too short to use. Has anybody else found this, and what have been your solutions? I shudder at the thought of using self-tappers.

Grind down the broken stud flush with the underbody, drill out the stud then try using a rivstud. This is what many who have done this say is the best sturdy alternative.

This useless limited forum platform doesn't allow copy 'n paste images or images to be uploaded into the posting. So exaamples of rivstuds here - http://studs.m88play.com/rivet-type-studs/

Thank you, I'd contemplated something of this nature, but did not know that they were readily available.

It was due to a makeshift repair of this type that I need a new undertray, and it does not adress the problem of the side skirt nuts. But thank you for the suggestion.

Rivstuds (and opposite nuts) are the favoured choice for permanent fixing alternatives.

Ray is right too - you can never have enough fastenings and fixings - plastic or stainless steel! :)

My rivet gun expands rivnuts but for only small diameter bolts. You can use a bolt, locking nut and two spanners. Aluminum rivnuts are the easiest to expand. The fitting of stainless steel rivnuts is a lot more difficult without the proper expansion tools.
