Broken Wing Mirror

Upon returning to my car in a well known supermarket car park some nice person has knocked my wing mirror forwards ie towards the bonet. When I then tried to move it back to its correct position it basically fell off in my hands.
Now looking at the fitting there is a triangular piece of plastic which fits into the mirror but when i try to place it back on the stem there is no resistance and the mirror just flaps around. Could this bit of plastic be worn and if so where could i get one, and any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Probably come off the thread.

Push mirror forward to reveal one socket head screw. Remove this and the base will come away from the door, but will still be connected by the wires. follow the wires up the base and you will see why it's loose. To tighten the spring loaded bolt that has a splined socket you will need the special tool. The tool just happens to be the same spline as an old ford cortina (pinto engine) head bolt tool. You will need to remove the plug from the loom and remove the wires from the hole in the base to get the tool in !!!

For plug removal if you do not have the tool.

Mike is spot on - what he's trying to say is it's quite common and a right backside of a job. Search and there is more on here about it. I think I cut 3 separate fingers when I was trying to mess with mirror wiring plugs one time...
 
Personally I would head down to the auto jumble at the weekend and pick up a good second hand one for a tenner. Theres always several around in lots of different colours (but mostly guards red for some reason). This seems a lot simpler to me and doesn't involve removing any fingers......


I may even have one (offside) in black somewhere if thats any use.
 
That's a fair shout, except that you still have to get the wires out of the plug to change one as (for reasons I have never been able to fathom) Porsche put the plug in the mirror rather than the door and it is too big to fit through the shaft that holds the mirror together.

I'd have thought the plug in the door with a big enough hole in the panel to fit it through so the mirror could be unscrewed and then unplugged would have been a far simpler design.

Your quite right. I'd forgotten I just cut the wires and fitted a new connector to mine when I fitted the 968 mirrors.
 
Having given it some more thought a plug either side is what is required as only having one in the door would make changing the motor a nightmare. They should have had a short loom with connectors either end that stays permanenly through the mirror shaft, but the extra connector would have cost money I guess.
