Bum steer

The steering on my 1988 Lux has become a tad reluctant. It now requires two hands to yank the car round the gentlest curve.
The steering wheel seems quite free for the first quarter turn, then tightens then frees again. I would say it loosens a little as the engine warms up.
I've ordered a rebuild kit from Porscheshop for the pump which is damp with fluid and there'e usually a damp patch on the drive.
But if anyone has any idea what could be causing the problem I'd love to hear.
 
Ive experienced a similar problem when I had a rover and the fault was traced to the rack needing reconned to cure it.
 
Sorted! I had some gasket work done and the mechanic degreased the engine, including the small UJ on the steering column.
I think this must have been running dry and causing the steering to stiffen.
Plenty of WD40 and copper grease solved the problem. But it's worth bearing in mind that this could happen to anyone with a 944.
Keep your UJs well oiled.
 
Interesting thread. My steering is a pain at low speeds, very heavy. Not got power steering so is it possible that the rack needs oil?
