Bumper Grill Mesh on a 986

In the next week or so I'm going to remove my bumper to replace the aircon radiators as the aircon hasn't worked since I bought the car and I am pretty certain its due to corrosion of the rads.

What's your opinion on adding mesh to protect the rads? I'm not sure I am a fan of it as it changes the look of the front bumper but maybe it will look better in black?

I’ve fitted zunsports to my last three porsche after chums had paid loads to replace items rotten leaves have caused failures

I will look them up now and see how they look. I just don't want to change the appearance of the car but it definitely needs something to protect the internal components otherwise its going to cost more in the long run.

I too lost my a/c rads to leafy mulch corrosion and since fitting grills 2 years ago not a leaf in there at all.
Does make sense, even a selling feature!

Hi,
I recently had black grills attached behind the vanes on my 996 (similiar layout) and they work perfectly and do not alter the look of the car. I looked at Zunsport ones and to attach them you have to remove the vanes which means the install is not reversible. I had DW Peformance of Wellingborough install mine, a great service.
Worth doing though if you're spending the money on rads and condensors.

One of my ac rads also failed a few years ago so I replaced the rads and drier myself and decided to do something about the openings on the front bumper.
I thought about Zunsport grilles but I wasn't overly happy in the way the are fitted and the fact they are fitted in front of the aperture cross bars.
Then you have think about the size of the mesh, too small and it could affect air flow into the rads, too large and you won't achieve what you want to achieve.
Seeing that I had the front bumper off to replace the rads I decided to but some plastic mesh from eBay and fix behind cross bars with very small cable ties.
Once fitted, the downside is that it is difficult if not impossible to get into the aperture to remove dead leaves. I think one of my rads was hit by a stone causing the initial loss of gas so its a compromise between protecting the rads from stones and stopping leaf debris getting in.
Before fitting the mesh I used to use an air gun with an extended nozzle tube to blow the worst of small stones and leaf debris out which I still do with somewhat more restricted access but at least less gets in.
What puzzles me is that why do Porsche fit mesh to these intakes on the top of the model ranges as standard but the lower models the intakes are left open to suffer the inevitable damage that will eventually occur.
The mesh I bought did not cost very much, I made a cardboard template to get the shape correct before cutting and fitting.
I am quite happy with the finished result.

As another precaution, I take the wheel arch liners out normally at least once a year to clear any small stones from the rad fan blade shrouds and debris from in front of the rads at the same time.

Some great feedback on fitting the grills I think I will add something to protect the new components.

I don't like the idea of fitting the grill in front as it will change the appearance but by fitting a black mesh behind the grill this will be subtle and also effective in protecting the rads.

I cant understand either why Porsche would not add a mesh to these areas to protect the internal components. They must have had so many vehicles into workshops over the years to replace the rads and condensers but I guess it makes them a lot of money.

Its a while since I looked at the Zunsport grilles so just checked their website and on the 981 at least, the individual grille sections are fitted between the cross bars (not in front, don't know where I got that from).
But watching their video on how to fit them there is always a risk of scratching the paintwork no matter how careful you are and thorough you are masking up around the openings.
So as I said previously, as the front bumper is off to replace the ac rads its no hassle to fit a mesh behind the cross bars.

And I understand, some Porsche Centres devalue a trade in value if the car is fitted with non-Porsche fitted parts such as intake mesh.

I was due to have the Zunsport grilles fitted as part of a replacement of my offside AC unit (which had been punctured by a stone) but then lockdown happened so it's all on hold. I'm not usually a fan of any mods but the damage to the AC units seems common and I've spent enough time clearing leaves from the main front intake for these to seem like a sensible addition. Plus (I presume) the old grilles can be kept for any new owner.

Interested in the 3D printing option. I've a couple of printers and it's something I'll have to look into.

If you were to manufacture a black grill on a 3D printer I'd happily buy a set from you. I wouldn't remove my existing grill I would fit them to the back of it so that they were discrete like some of the other members have mentioned.

I'm not a huge fan of Halfords but due to lock down there's not many other options available I was considering seeing if they had a mesh in the boy racer section that I could paint matt black and fit to the inside of the bumper or even to the plastic cowling that directs the air to the rads. I have decided that I don't want to add a grill to the outside or replace my existing grill with a different one.

I guess the only thing to watch out for is the grill becoming covered by leaves in Autumn and blocking the airflow completely whilst driving which may be why Porsche have never added a mesh?
