Bumper repair advice [:(]

Well - went to wash the car this morning... and its probabily the most expensive car wash I will do for a while [:(]

Went round doing the wheels first - then all of a suddern as I was going round brushing them I noticed this: see if you can see it:

Yip.. and guess how it happened (well I think).. I think what has happened is as I have gone round the car with the jet wash - the lance hose has got caught on the corner of the bumper and I have pulled it - and the consiquence:

Its the only way I can think of that its happened as it was not there before i started - defo as that was the first wheel I sprayed...

Absolutley gutted - its turned my nearly perfect body into something with a defect and I dont like it!!.

So - what are my options for repair do you think??????

New bumper
Fix and paint

....and are new bumpers still available?

v.sad and fed up now!

Yes PUs are still available, the they cost about as much as a 951 PU! Any foglight PU will fit, although there are detail differences between some. Theu only used to sell for £100 - £150 in the mid-late nineties, so I wouldnt expect to pay too much now.

Id advise you to see that all of the original finish is removed and that plenty of plasticiser is used in the new paint. Many bodyshops will try to paint over whats already there and far too many will try to tell you that they neednt use plasticiser "as the original paint already has it" etc...

OK thanks mate.

So you think this is repairable as apposed to needing a new bumper.. (sorry not sure I know what PU means?)

I did wonder if it could be stripped back - glued / filled or something, sanded and then painted again? was that your thinking?

Thanks again - may be its not TOO bad!

PU = polyurethane: this is what theyre made out of. I dont think that it can be mended effectively, no. Ive had several 951 PUs repaired and they all failed after a while. With a new one costing over £600 (from memory) Id be looking for a good used replacement.

I just can't fathom how a hose can have caused a split that bad unless your bumper is a fibreglass copy (but the black bit does look like standard PU? [&:] I am suspecting that maybe it has been repaired before and your hose misfortune has opened up a weak point.

I repair things like that for a living and I suggest it can be repaired again. It is simply a case of melting the split back together with a hot iron, plastic welding if you like, and then a light skim of flexible plastic filler before priming and painting as normal. No it won't be 100% as strong as the original, but it will be strong enough. Let's not forget the original broke anyway.

I suggest finding a bodyshop or mobile Smart repairer local to you who is used to repairing splits like that. Emphasise just how picky us owners of older Porsches are and if they shy away you'll know how confident they are of performing a good repair. Expect to pay circa £120 to £150 all in

My post and Pauls appear to contradict each other, but I agree fully with what he has said. PU should be able to be plastic welded, but I gave up trying to find someone who did it properly (and who would pay for the correct filler rods too!).

You still might find that a replacement part and proper paint is competitive on price though; depending on the quotes that you receive.

Gents - great stuff - thanks for the info.

Its defo a PU version as its tough black plastic... I am only guessing on this hose thing really as it was not like that when I started washing the car..

Simon - sorry to be a bit dim again [:)] but the new 951 one that you say from memory is £600 ish.. Is my car a 951? (sorry - just not sure what the 951 refers too)

do any of the 'normal' online suppliers sell these that you know of - or is it a case of eBay etc for one and get it stripped and painted if I went the new route?

Paul - that sounds promising... you no where local to me are you (ashford, Middlesex..) hehe ... [:D][;)] and fancy a private job!

Cheers Anthony

just worked it out - 951 is the 944 Turbo - I think!! so theoretically mine should be cheaper???

Theoretically. In practice the prices are similar despite the earlier part being far simpler and less subatantial. Expect to pay in excess of £600 for either at your local OPC. The part number is 93150537105.

look what I found!!

Ok - you have been spot on here mate.

Spoke to a good few bodyshops and smart repair people... Bodyshops really didnt seem to want to know, one guy said that they coulf 'fill' it and spray but could not guarentee the finish!! NO THANKS
Most of the smart repair guys also said that they wouldnt / couldnt repair that as it was to bad - one saying that there was no such a method for that bumper as a plastic weld...

However.... I spoke to this guy here:
http://www.smartspraysolutions.co.uk/
Sound guy (from the phone anyway).. Very confident in repairing it and I sent him detaild pics of the bumper.. I didnt suggest anything and after looking at the pics - he said yes - that can be plastic welded and then painted - you will not know its been done.

I then laid on the fact that I am very picky with my Porsche and wouldnt be happy at all if I could notice the repair.. He was very confident and said he does these all the time and not too worry.. Needless to say after a long chat - he is coming Friday to my house to do it...

All he needs is power and a water supply...

Cost - exactly the figues as you suggested above, so im ok with that as it seems that whatever bumper I buy second had for approx £25 - £50 depending on condition I would need to get sprayed anyway - and apart from the crack my spoiler is near perfect..

He also said that if I wanted on the day he could spray the complete spoiler.....

Kind of happier (I think) now..

No problem Simon - thanks for the tip..

I think on this occasion I will leave it with he guy I have booked Friday.. He is fully aware of what sort of job I am expecting so i'll give him a chance....

Will report back with pics after Friday.

Cheers Anthony

I've been away for a week and see you had someone coming to fix it last Friday, any news?

I'm a bit worried he quoted to fix it without seeing it and even said 'not to worry you definately won't see it', though he had only seen photo's at that point, that's not the way I like to operate [&:]

Hi Chaps.... Sorry very long delay in replying.. Travelling a lot with work etc etc.

Anyway.... Understand completely what you are saying there Paul... And agree also.. but I gave the guy a go... and all I can say is GREAT... he was a TOP guy... spent nearly all day on it really.... welded up the crack, and then spoke to me about 'plating' the fixed crack also for extra protection.. What this actually meant was a plastic plate that he made to size bonded to the other side of the crack (inside) if you see what I mean.. This means that the actual weld isn't under as much stress as its bonded on the inside.

Anyway - here are the pics of the result.. Sorry - very poor quality as they were taken on my phone and then I have re-sized them so that they are viewable here.. In the flesh - I personally think that you cannot see the fix - and believe me I am picky :)
