Burning oil!!

Hi folks. My 1986 Lux uses a bit of oil and I have been informed by those that follow me on trips out that she is putting out a bit of blue smoke when accelerating hard, the rest of the time she seems fine, after a good run out in excess of 100mls she probably uses about a 1/4 of a litre at the most. Apart from the inevitable (rebuild etc) can any one recommend any products, addatives etc that could help with this.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

It sounds like yours piston rings are getting a little old, if it only smokes under hard acceleration then theres no need to worry yet...my old mercedes 230ce did this for the 20,000miles that i did in it without getting any worse

Forgot to mention, STP stop smoke is designed to swell the rings, seals, etc, but I haven't used it I'm afraid...sorry!

presumably its ring blow-by creating crankcase pressure being fed up back through the inlet ? you might look at the breather filter system and see if it is working properly. Maybe check your plugs and if black change them to a hotter burning type. Otherwise the only permanent solution is to remove the rearview mirror [:D][:D][:D]

Hi Nick, additives can be a hit and miss temporary solution but Jon M (I think) recommeded the Wynns version a few years ago at the same time that I was nursing a dying Metro Gti with major oil burning. It did work and reduced the consumption considerably. I was already running it on a pretty thick 20w50 cheapo oil, but it was the additive that helped the most. Worth a try for under a tenner IIRC
