Bushes on an S2

Chaps,

I have been advised that the bushes on my S2 are worn, and I should think about replacing them. I *think* this is referring to the front bushes, but perhaps the question should appy to the rear ones as well.

How involved a job is this? I am thinking of doing it myself, at home, with slightly limited garage tools (jack, stands, good spanner set, pretty good car maintenace experience but no lift or garage). Is this do-able?

What sort of bushes are best to fit? Usually, suspension bushes come in different hardnesses for different uses - my car is pretty much only used on the road, with perhaps one or two track days a year. Where is the best place to buy them from?

Also, people on here have raved about fitting 968 caster mounts. What are these, and where can I buy them from?

If anyone happens to have a set of photos from when they did the job, please do put 'em up here - that would be very useful, thanks!

Thanks for the link. I can't remember which bushes - would need to look at the advice note from the last service.

Is there an article anywhere about changing the bushes which details the different ones and how to do them?

Rear bushes - forget it; they are virtually non-replaceable.

Castor bushes are easy - get them from an OPC (preferably Exeter).

Front of wishbone bushes are available - I bagged a set as they didn't used to be and I thought it was worth having them as spares. I'd suggest you need a press and a vocabulary of your most powerful expletives having removed mine to fit Powerflex replacements. Alternatively replace the whole wishbone and get new balljoints as well.

I'm not aware of any different hardness available from Porsche and you don't want poly in a road car.

Of course it could be ARB bushes which are very simple to replace, but you need to know what diameter your bar is to get the right size.
 
Oli, if it's the anti roll bar bushes then they are very easy to do at home. It's just a case of jacking up the front of the car and undoing a few (hopefully not seized [;)]) bolts to drop the front bar, then do the same for the rear. Don't be tempted to do one side at a time, you really need the whole axle to be unloaded to make the job easy fr yourself.

Each ARB has IIRC 4 bushes, two to fix the ARB to the car and two at the ends attached to the axle. Chris at Exeter would probably sort out out a full set for around £50 and it will make a world of difference compared to tired worn out bushes. The caster mounts are really a bush in their own right and secure the rear of the wishbone to the chassis, the 968 version has a lot less rubber than our original S2 mounts and once again will sharpen up the steering. Last time I replaced mine they were about £40 a side
