buy a boxter - go private or via a trader ?

Private is ok providing you get an expert inspection and check the vehicle history before handing over your cash. Then get a third-party warranty like Tesco. IMHO, full service history helps, but isn't as important as doing this.

I'd avoid any non specialist garage , forget a car on the local lot in amongst Vauxhalls and Seats - it might be genuine car, but chances are they bought it at auction, ran it for a few months themselves for a bit of fun and are selling it on with little attention to fixings things or keeping maintenance up.

Private sales - get an inspection, and preferably from a Porsche expert , not the AA/RAC

Lots of Porsche specialists who will have average - good cars, and no time for the poor ones. www.911virgin.com , Shirleys Garage http://www.shirleys-garage.co.uk/carsforsale.asp , Autobahn in Coventry, Paragon www.paragongb.com , Strasse http://www.strasse.co.uk/cars.asp?car_id=690 , www.911sport.co.uk to name a few.

Buying private in Late Autumn through to March will grab you a good price that will be little different if you sell on in mid summer

buy private or via a trader ?

would want the security of a warranty

would I need to be wary going private or is full service history enough ?

Just remember that 'A second hand car on a dealers forecourt is only someone elses used car' The dealer in most cases knows little or nothing about the history of the car. The guy you need to talk to is the previous owner. Thats why you should buy private.
Go see the car at the owner and cars registered address - there you will be able to ask all those awkard questions that the dealer does not have the answeres for. [:-] Get yourself some books so you know what to look for or take a friend who does! Look at all paper work and contact previous owners - satisfy yourself that that you would be happy to buy the car and then get a PPI - Peter Morgan.
Don't be afraid to walk - plenty of cars on the market and the private route will save you £'s.[8D]
Before setting out on your search get a list of all options you car must have - this can save time travelling to see cars that don't fit your requirments!
Plenty of good cars out there - enjoy your search [;)]

I'm sure there is lots of good info on this forum about buying a Boxster and what to look out for - you should also check out boxa.net for some buying advice.

Like the others have said, make sure you get the car checked before parting with any hard earned cash"¦ I found my car on Pistonheads classifieds and got the seller to take the car along to the local official Porsche Centre and I paid for a 111 point check. This pointed out a few things wrong with the car which helped with the price negotiation. I then stuck a Tesco warranty on the car (payable monthly, interest free!) and now drive about with a permanent grin!

Good luck with the search! [;)]

Do yourself a favour and buy Peter Morgan's buyers guide:

If you do decide to buy from a Dealer ask for the previous owners address and if available phone number and call them and ask if they will spare the time to discuss the car. they have already sold it so are likley to be honest in what they tell you as long as they owned it for some time. 9 months plus....
