Its very difficult to even see scored bores with a borescope - but I'd still would have one done myself. Signs of IMS issues are also difficult without at least taking the gearbox off - you can have a weeping RMS instead and you wouldn't know without looking.

Get a warranty!

 
Hello,

I am viewing a 2005 Cayman 3.4 S this weekend that has done 50k miles and has full service history.

Should i be worried about buying one of the very first 987 Caymans? I could go Gen 2 but currently i'd be saving 10k-12k by going towards the gen 1 Cayman.

Is there any signs to look out for in regards to IMS / bore scoring issues?

The only real giveaway is high oil usage that you'd notice

however the sellers unlikely to tell you...!!!

if you can afford it go gen2 - apart from no bore issues and a more modern engine more fuel efficient etc.

and pdk too if that's your bag !

Theres been a few threads on this over the last 12 months talking of issues with Ims & bore scoring. As spiderman & Dylan say it would be best to obtain a warranty if you can. Bore scoring may be an issue but you would only know by a bore scope

From talking to my local Indy the Ims on the Cayman gen 1 3.4 S is not an issue

Ive run a 2006 Cayman S for just over a year now and it's been perfect

Ive had a bore scope done for piece of mind, changed to a low temp thermostat and upgraded to Millers Nano Drive oil. The car drives superb

Obviously the decision on model is entirely yours but I would not be afraid of the gen 1, it's a great car

i have been told by one Indy that you cannot fit the PSE to 05 caymans?

even though the Gen 2 looks quite £££ looking at the miles?

I would go gen 2 2.9 gen 1 is so dated now inside imo.

From memory I think the change in tax rate was 2006. Definitely worth checking. Saving can pay for your servicing bills!

That's what I did last year. I could afford a Gen 2 2.9 or a Gen 1 3.4S - I chose the Gen 2 2.9 because I preferred the interior and wanted less worry about the engine.

 
I went to Gen2 S last year the values had risen over the two previous years but the fuel and tax savings do help, as for the interiors being dated I disagree but then if anyone is into new cars all of the time it can look a little retro but it's good and far more modern than such as the 996 my son recently bought. I checked on the Gen1 I traded in and it sold quickly even with 88,000 miles in it, I had it for for almost eight years only issues being a blown chrono pack, coil packs and gear change cables at about 80,000 it did have a small sign of oil seepage on the sump flange gasket but nothing from RMS etc writing this makes me wonder where it is now YN56 UPT.
