Buying a 944.......

Hi everyone,

So i have decided to take the leap and buy my 1st Porsche 944, i have about £3000 to spend so i'll be looking at either a Lux or S with a fair few miles on the clock.

Any advise on the following would be great!

(1) I understand that things like cam belts need changing every 30k miles, what sort of costs should i expect to pay?

(2) are there any other common gremlins that i should be prepared for as part of owning a 944?

(3) Am i completely mad for even expecting to get anything like a half decent car for £3000

Any help on these questions would be a great help, and if you have any pearls of wisdom they would be greatly recieved!

Cheers Guys

Matt

Depending on which specialist you use, a set of cam and balance belts will costs circa £300 fitted, this can be more if some of the rollers need replacing at the same time and a lot more if the water pump needs doing.

You should be able to find an average Lux for your budget, but don't buy the first that you see as the diference between a bad car and a really good one will be huge. Cosmetically they should all look pretty good for their age, but its their mechanical condition that can vary a lot so shop around.

Take a look at our various buyers guides at the top of this forum and let us know how your search is going

Well i got a beauty for £2K so i think your budget will get you something just as nice. Look on autotrader .co.uk and ebay of course, there's loads on there. Just for a price guide if nothing else.
Bodily wise most of them are in good nick, engines are really strong. They're plenty fun to drive. Bits and bobs and services can be expensive but that's par for the course for a thoroughbred car. A lot of work you can do yourself mind to keep costs down. I've had Beetles for years and it's quite unbelievable how similar some of the workings are.
Later models come with power steering, air-con, electric sunroof etc. There are a few different models to choose from, Lux, Turbo, S, S2. Get a book and read up on them to see what the differences are. And if the first one you see is a beaut then don't be put off by it just 'cos it's the first you've seen. I think it becomes apparent quite quickly if it's a no good'n.
And only get a red or white one, it's the only two colours they look good in. I'll probably get shot down for that but it's true, and them without a red or white one all know it.
Good luck fella.
