Buying a 964

Hi Everyone, i hope someone can help me here, ive decided to buy a 964 and i have seen quite a nice one, however there is one bit on the car im not sure about, there seems to be a rusty / dodgy bit of metal work behind the rear light / above the rear bumper, ive read elsewhere that this could be part of the engine surround or part of the bumper mounts. The rear bumper has dropped slightly on this side, i wanted to get someone elses advice before i pay out for a inspection on it. I have attached a picture to show you the area im talking about.

Rob,

It's really difficult to get an impression of the problem you describe from that picture. There is a part of the rear quarter sheet metal which sits under the light unit which is quite "bendable". The gap between the bumper and the light unit is controlled by this part. Any rust in this area would be unusual and it might suggest some repair has been done at some time. The light unit comes out quite easily with a single screw so it might be simple to have a more detailed look.

I guess you mean a bumper support bar. There are two each side, one is a straight(ish) piece of tube and the other is shaped like a Y with three fastening points. On every car I looked at (before purchasing) the Y ones were rusted away. Including on the one I bought. They are very easy to replace and cost about £30 each IIRC.

Agree with other comments - I would remove the light cluster and have a look, and also open the rear engine lid and look for that side. Any new paint, or metal out of shape would indicate a shunt/rust.

The bumpers cover a rail with two shock absorbers - that all should be good. But the fitting of the bumper to car/rail is not rigid - so it flexes a little so don't expect BMW panel fit lines around there. I can't tell from the picture if anything is wrong - the body gaps look about right to me!

Thanks for the replies, its really difficult to describe the area im talking about, if i was to get down to the rear light at eye level and look under the light and inwards , it looks like there is some panel falling down.
The rest of the car looks completely genuine and this part doesnt look like its been in a shunt, just looks a bit suspect to a newbie like me !
I looked at another 964 today at a specialist and the mecahnics said this is quite a common thing on 964's, so i think i may get a inpspection done on it, I hear Peter Morgan is the man to do this ? is this right ?

Thanks

That's the bit I was talking about. Basically it holds the light cluster in position. If you remove the light unit it becomes more obvious - the bottom plate can very easily be eased by finger pressure - up or down. It sounds from your description that the plate just needs to be moved up a little to move it out of the line of sight. If you move it too much you'll find that the light unit will be a very tight fit - it's just a matter of a little trial and error to get it right.

Hope that helps.

I live near Chichester (about 5 mins from Goodwood) in West Sussex, so if there are some people nearby that can show me some of their cars and what to look for that would be great.
