Buying a 964rs or maybe clubsport

I'm after a bit of advice, being new to the whole porsche thing... I am a caterham driver and am after something a bit more habitable for those 3 hour trips to track days and jaunts to Spa/Ring. I am familiar with rs in various guises having driven 964 and 993 derivatives and also been out in a 964 cs.

I know it's all subjective, but what differences might i see between driving a regular rs and a cs? Is the cs that much more unforgiving given its stiffer build, welded cage etc?

Secondly, how often do clubsports come up? My impression is not that often (I have been speaking to Paul Mclean at GT Classics and "am on his list" now).

Thirdly, if I cannot wait for a cs or indeed fancy a few creature comforts, what "good" rs are out there for sale at the moment? By good, I mean mehanically sound, well maintained - not troubled about concours or mileage and LHD preferred - the car is going on track.

I am intrigued by the yellow one Paul has with the various upgrades and new paint job. It's on pistonheads too but seems not to be shifting. Has anyone looked it over and has any thoughts? Perhaps many prefer a standard spec or lower mileage?

All thoughts greatly appreciated.

James

CS is as you describe, stiffer and noiser. Not sure about more unforgiving, thats personal opinion I guess. Things get murky when you start compairing standard RS with cage installed, particularly if it's been done to CS spec. The standard car will be a more comforting drive on long journies and you may wish to trailer a cs on noise reasons alone.
Best advice is go and have a look at as many as you can find. Get the car inspected if you have doubts over your own abilty to check the car over when you eventaully find one you are happy with. Most RS's have had some mods done by now and many have had off's involving body fdamage. the cars are exceptionally stronge, so don't be too put off by this. Any good quality inspection will highlight serious bodywork defects.Best of luck in your search.

There are a few cars around at the moment, usual suspects like GT Classics and Autofarm (1x 314 bhp 3.8 RSR rep + 1 x 317 bhp 3.8 conversion) usually have one plus there are occasionally cars in PP or a few other speciaslists. I think the going rate seems to be 30-32k for a nice car and little if anything extra for a modified car.

CSs cost a bit more and are a lot more noisy so bear this in mind if you are thinking about driving to and from tracks and want more comfort than your Caterham.

Give Mel a call to see if he knows about any cars for sale.

Or if you are feeling particularly masochistic, there is a 17k mile 964 Cup car for sale at Gmund. Looks very nice.

Thanks chaps. My other car is Caterham Superlight R with no screen or roof. I have driven this to Spa and Ring in the rain with a crash helmet so even a Clubsport is going to seem like the lap of luxury!

I had seen the Gmund Cup car. I rather imagined that those would have had very hard lives. Will have a look at Autofarm.

I know nothing........[;)]

RS's, Cups and CS's bit thin on the ground at the mo. But at the start of a trackday season, not a good time to buy!!

Best see if Paul/Thomas can source one for you, although I understand good one's are getting hard to find.

My 964RS Lightweight in LHD is for sale, Melvin and Feroz [Yoda] seem to have overlooked it ? Probably because I've been telling them I will sell it for a while. I really am selling to get a 996TT to modify to promote my new tuning business.

Email me for details, pics etc on mail@weltmeister.co.uk

Allan

Mel - I had already heard your name and been given your number. As the man who should know all, mind if I give you a call?

Really don't know what more I could add to the above Jimmy.

Sorry, didn't forget your car Allan, just aware there are few and far between at the present moment.

Contrary to popular belief I don't know all the 964RS's that are for sale -although from the calls I get, it would appear that punters think I do!! It is not for me to comment on what are, allegedly, 'good' or 'bad' cars -caveat emptor.

Read Lawrence's buying guide on the 964RS Register section of the Club site. Also have a look at www.porsche964.co.uk for more general 964 info, a lot of which applies to the RS.

look on www.mobile.de as well - make sure you select 'all countries' options - some other dealers in Germany but can't vouch for their reputations.

RS = superb
Clubsport = superb and a bit more. it is noisy but can be used. drove mine back from germany in a day - was superb and not that tiring as the sun was out, traffic light, and roads smooth. sat in a queue on the M6 in the pi55ing rain & dark on a friday evening its less exciting. buy earplugs. seats very comfortable, ride less so. massive experience as you see, hear and feel so much more with nothing like interior trim to dull the sensations. it just feels that little bit more angry than your average car. [:D]

good luck in your search

I have driven The RS 3.8 replica it is made from a RS basic. It is a beautifull car and has a free flow exhaust system on it. I drove it from Oxford where it is stored, to cheshire where exhaust and full cage were fitted about 3 or 4 years ago. The owner is a frind of mine and he lives abroad. It has done very few KMs in the last few years. It has got a lot more power than my standard car.
