Buying a 996 C4S - advice please

After seeing Glen's 996 C4S in action, I've been thinking about buying one for myself.

I went to see this one today - Car linky

It was a beautiful car to drive. 55k miles, new discs/pads, fully toyed up and with a sports exaust.

Only slight con's are grey leather - don't mind it that much. Other thing is although it's FSH there is no inspection paperwork - is this essential? And the bottom of the crankcase looks slightly oily - RMS maybe or do they all have some oil - none on the floor. Paint work needs a bit of TLC and windscreen is quite pitted but it seems a good price. What do you think? Plate is S4 CHS if anyone knows it! 2 owners too! I really like it and the dealer (indy) seems good.

IMO wait till the winter, pay a lower price for a car that you really want, without an RMS issue or possible VarioCam Plus leak. However a C4S with sports exhaust is an awesome combination!

Some guy almost bought it but the finance didnt go through - just noticed it's done an extra 3k miles since the ad. I asked to see the service inspection reports though. Sounds the business.

At the moment there are 996 turbos with less mileage asking £45k. Wait till the winter, and you'll get them for very low £40's (last winter I saw them as low as £42k). I reckon the C4S is better looking, but the turbo is a bargain basement supercar!

I wasn't too keen on the grey to be honest - the black seems to stay younger looking with miles.

I think a 996 Turbo may be an option - looking on the Porsche site that car now looks steep for the miles and condition.

I love black though - a 996 c4s or maybe a turbo in black would be good.

Only thing is my Box would have to be traded but it's mint and a 2005 - not sure if it would be less in a month than now anyway as its not soft-top buying time!

Don't worry, I'm sure whatever you lose on the Boxster you will gain in greater depreciation on the turbo or C4S....come Dec/Jan/Feb, when the market is as dead as a dodo you can cherry pick the bargains.......have u seen the LHD GT2 on pistonheads asking £45k? Bargains aplenty![;)]

Hmmm, love the colour! No there is one on Autotrader - http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/dealerservices_photoad.asp?did=64675&pageid=1&id=200643254761695

Have you driven either a C4S or a TT yet? I'd be interested to know if you find the 996 as a "step back" in terms of design and technology after your experience with the more modern 987? I'd imagine 450bhp would go some way to off setting any concerns....[:D]

But how often can you actually use more than say 280bhp on todays crowded pot holed speed camera infested roads! (Legally of course[;)])

That 16k turbo looks great, and a good price too. Wish I had a spare 40k. Mmm, wonder if they'd take my 996 as a part-ex :)

If you drive the C4S it's a very modern car IMO. The 997 is a great car but to be honest the 996 just feels better to me and I cant explain why! Had a 997 (that I had driven) and a 996 next to each other in Seal Grey and it was the 996 that got the pulse racing!

I'm on the look out now for either a C4s, with Bose, Black Int and PCM pref, 2003/3. Or a Turbo 996. Has to be manual!

:)

I agree with scotia, I've had my C4S CAB for over 2 years now. Recently I had a 997S on loan for a week and was actualy looking for reasons to justify spending an extra 30K to upgrade.
