Buying a 996 Turbo and importing to New Zealand

I would like to buy a good condition 996 Turbo and export it to New Zealand. It would be my 1st Porsche. It will be a drivers car that I hope might appreciate over time but I can enjoy. I am hoping I might pick something up between 35 and 45 THOUSAND POUNDS. I need some advice on who I should buy from that will give me an honest deal and what I should look for and the questions I need to ask.

Thanks in advance

Hi

I think you should go to a reputable dealer who knows the cars well and has a reputation to maintain. I bought mine from Chappell Sports Cars in Chichester and I couldn't recommend them more highly. The car came with a very comprehensive two year warranty, any problem I had was sorted without question. Obviously it's down to location and availability, if you find a dealer you trust, most will source a car for you.

I'm not sure a warranty will be much good to you if the car is off to New Zealand, it might be worth trading that out of the deal and spend the money on a comprehensive survey. I used Peter Morgan and I was very happy.

Good Luck

David

Thanks David,
What do you think off the 996? Any particular options I should look out for? I notice some 997's seem pretty reasonable. Any thoughts?

Hi

When I bought my car (2.5 years ago) the 996 Turbo was seriously under valued and absolute steel, that's why I went for a 996 over a 997 as it was much better value for money. Values have steadily risen since then and the 996 has definitely caught up. So the decision 996/997 is less clear cut. I think it might come down to personal preference.

I went for a car with the X50 power upgrade, not because I wanted the extra power (I'm sure the standard car has more than enough), but I could see it would be more desirable in the future. Apart from that, I think condition, service history and mileage are more important than options etc.

In hindsight I would have bought a manual, I miss that extra level of control. My only misgiving is that the car is so fast and so capable that it's difficult to have real fun on the road without getting into 'lose your licence territory' within a matter of seconds. Frankly the car is far more capable that I am, I'm sure a 997 would be even more like that.

I hope this helps

Hi, Don't know whether you are UK based or emigrating but I am currently selling up and moving to Australia and taking my 996C4S over as well, I don't know if the rules are the same but for OZ you have to had owned the car for 12 months (and need an import licence for OZ) and prove it with invoice for the car, V5, driving licence, statement of travel, visa and copy of passport page and $50 payment plus other info, its on a points system as well, I am using a company called Iron Lady to manage the move as well. I now have my import licence. The import tax over there is based on a 2 tier system and Australian valuation of the car + shipping + insurance is below $63K then you pay a much lower tax rate if over you pay a much higher rate (33% + GST).
My cousin, who has lived and worked in OZ for many years, tried to purchase and import an Aston Martin Vantage a few years ago as the rules around that time allowed it if you worked some of the time in the UK but just as he was about to purchase the rules changed and you had to work here for a year! Best of luck with the purchase and hope all goes well.

I am selling my 03 turbo privately if you're interested. It is in arctic silver, automatic and has less than 58000 miles. It was a good car when I used it but has been a garage ornament lately. Based in the North East if interested
