Buying a 996 Turbo

Hi

One of my sons is looking to buy a 996 Turbo and has been offered one at Portiacraft in Mill Hill London. Is this a good company to deal with. There are some that I understand are not to be touched with a barge pole etc.

Any views bot positive or negative would be appreciated.

Never had anything to do with them, but have read mixed reviews. The key thing is to get an independent inspection. I once read (... on the Internet, so it must be true!), that that company sometimes refuses other garages to do inspections - if that's true, I'd stay well clear.

I did not realise that my son had been doing his own research. It seems the car he is looking at is an 03 manual turbo with about 35k and has just been serviced by Porsche and has a full porsche one year warranty. That should be reasonable insurance against any problems.

The Portiacraft site hasn't got much detail on the car, but on paper it looks like a decent buy. The warranty is a real bonus, so if it is in good shape body-wise you can't go too far wrong as long as the purchase is straightforward. He will have to go to an OPC for servicing anyway, so after-sales service shouldn't be an issue. I hope it works out well for him - they are great cars. [;)]

You can't buy a car from a non-OPC dealer with a Porsche warranty, that purchase will invalidate it.
You need to own the car for 3 months IIRC before you can get one.

Hmmm. I didn't know that. I knew that non-P dealers couldn't get the warranty, and you had to own the car for 3 months before you could get one, but I didn't realise it wasn't transferrable.

It's been that way since the previous version at least. Only on a private sale is it transferrable. Have a look at the last page of the warranty document on the previous warranty (Part A subsection 2)

for what it's worth (sample size of 1!) my dealings with them for my car have been okay. no probs with the car so far (nearly had it a year). they did an oil change for me for free, checked a couple of things i was worried about after a track day for free. only issues i have is that it was due a brake fluid change just before i bought it which they missed/didn't do and they had to chase down a spare key from the previous owner after i bought the car which i think they really should have got before selling. hope this may help.

i hope this post doesn't violate any terms of forum usage, if so, will delete if instructed.

As Rodney pointed out, this is not correct or valid. A dealer cannot transfer an OPC warranty. Call me old-fashioned, but I'm always wary of advertisers that
a) don't punctuate and
b) SHOUT.

Just my 2p.

It seems you heard before me. Well he has taken the plunge but is awaiting a tech assessment from I think the RAC and assuming that is OK he will buy the beauty.

Many thanks for all posts to this thread. I now have to get him to join PCGB.

RAC inspection? Not worth much in my opinion.

I had the RAC inspect my Boxster years ago. They have no idea about specific cars, so they just look for general things.
My inspector told me the car had an oil leak which would be very expensive to fix and I should walk away. He also picked up on other small items, and again, told me to walk away. But they were complete non-issues.

If he wants to get a Porsche warranty, he should get it inspected by an OPC, or if he doesn't then Peter Morgan who is very knowledgable.

Either way, he will love the turbo, it's an astonishing car

I agree with everything Rodney says!

I emailed you privately with what to have checked. The model is superb and at these prices are a fantastic buy. I had a 997tt and a 996tt both at the same time. All I could say is that I never got attached to the 997 in the same way I have with the 996.
