Buying a Boxster S ??????

Hi folks, not posted on the Boxster forum before. I've been in the club for several years now, I run the Northeast region and drive a 1983 911sc and a 1986 944, in the hope of increasing our number of Porsches my wife is in the middle of trying a couple of models to replace her slk 350. We had the Cayman S for a day yesterday and loved it but I fear we could be punching above our weight financially (looking at Porsche approved models at our local opc Newcastle) so on wednesday we are taking a Boxster S for the day, I wasn't so keen to start with as I like fixed coupes rather than soft tops but the more I looked over them at the opc the more I liked what I saw and prices are more favourable for the same/similar performance as a Cayman S.
So we are looking at one around 1-2yrs old with some nice extras and was looking for advice and any comments really on the new shape Boxster S, any real problems that they develop and recommended options etc.

All comments and suggestions greatly received

Thanks

Hi Nick
How is my old SC behaving itself ?
I have a Boxster 2.7 987 06 plate and have to say I find it great and every bit as quick as the 986 3.2 I used to own ,the cars can be picked up from around the £26K whick is sad at the depreciation levels and most 987 will have some warranty on then still. PH has hundreds of cars ,if you are looking at a Boxster I would not consider the OPC route as you can but a warranty inc 110 point check for 1k as far as the cars are concerned I find them superb to drive I am at present selling mine only because I fancy a change for a bit as this is my 9th Porsche but would buy another one.

happy hunting that is part of the fun look and drive as many as you can and when the right one comes along you will know it ...Speed yellow is stunning [:D][:D]

The Boxster/Cayman package is fantastic and, in many respects, I'd rather have a Boxster/Cayman than a 911. And, agree, the Boxster looks better value and the roadster configuration is a plus.

Definitely worth going for an 'S' and the 3.4 is a touch nicer than the 3.2, but you'll pay more.

Recently drove one with 19" and pasm, back to back with one with 18" and no pasm, and actually preferred it without pasm. Also drove a 3.4 tip, but IMO the 6-spd manual is far sperior.

If buying used, fiding the right spec is important, so decide exactly what you really need. My only 'must have' would be the heated seats.

heated sports seats and sports steering wheel for driving pleasure and pcm for resale

Personally I think the Box is nicer that the Cayman but that's because I like dropping the top in the summer (not that i've done that much this year).

I agree that heated seats are the best! so on a crisp winters day you can be cool but warm. The Box is an allrounder, i.e you can use it in winter as well as you can in summer. Ofter the fun in winter is slightly different but no less exciting.

Don't know about the gain you'll get from the 3.4 over the 3.2, I seem to recall that 0-62 is .2 quicker and it can do 169 over 167. There are some changes on the inside between the 3.2 and 3.4. Admittedly only subtle, but changes they are. Loss of power socket in drivers footwell, changes in hardback to seats. Basically the sort of things that would go unnoticed.

If music is in your life then you must go for a car with an upgraded sound pack. The basic one is 'not very good'.

And regardless of what salesmen say about yellow, white, red, etc not being so good on re-sale, buy the one that floats your boat not theirs.

I love guards red, but would happily swap for a speed yelloew.

Now there is a man with taste ...heated seats are you all a bunch of soft southerners[:D]
not needed plays havoc with the piles......heater on full blast scarf round the neck and a bunnet on and away you go especialy in the winter months ie thats July and August up here is Scotland....I find the wind deflecter not nearly as good as the one I had in the 996 cab no matter what speed you did there was no wind around your neck, the Box is best package an all year round car esp in SY brightens up the dull winter days

In MY defence, I do think heated seats are great in this environment, but I don't actually have them in my car [:(], i'm left with hat, gloves, scalf and the heater toasting my feet at 80F.

heated seats are great-the first thing my son puts on when he gets in[:D]
and many of us cayman owners who have previously had 911`s would say that boxsters are good value , but caymans are exceptional value (compared to 911`s)-cant wait to try the stelvio in my midengined beauty[:D]

Hi Nick

Having owned a 986S and a 987S, I can safely say that you won't be disappointed with a Boxster, and of course you can spec a hard top for the winter if you really want hard top protection, but the hood is so good you really won't need it.

Balance and handling is (as you have probably noticed) sublime, better than my current 997S and a very practical car to boot, plus the ability to 'pop the roof' at up to 32mph is handy in town.[8D]

As mentioned, heated seats get my vote, especially as my beloved other half feels the cold more than I do. For those who regard it as being soft, no doubt they make do by spooning hot coals down their underwear before setting off on bracing mornings, heh heh[:D]!

I might well be tempted back with the 3.4S, but the carrera is pretty addictive and likeably quirky!

Find a nice 987S (or indeed 986S) and enjoy!![:D]
Good luck

Of course! Silly me I forgot about the legendary Scots fortitude - and all after breakfasting on a bowl of moist cold gravel liberally sprinkled with a 'wee dram'![:D]

Coals down the pants? Must be Christmas stuff in the shops sending off a subliminal trigger.......'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...' etc[:D][:D]
Arf arf!
