Buying a ClubSport - how much please.

I am in the early stage of thinking about adding a Clubsport to my stable. Every time I see a 3.2, and especially a Clubsport I can't help think that this is the quintessential Porsche. Of course, I have to persuade the better half and the bank manager first.

Half the pleasure for me is the research which I will do thoroughly and will probably look to purchase early next year.

Can someone advise what I should pay? - it would have to be in exceptional condition with relatively low mileage and I know this means buying at the top end of the market but as I intend to keep it long term that wouldn't really bother me.

Also, how often do these cars come up for sale? Is there a reasonable flow to choose from?

Many thanks

You need to speak to Alan Cordery at the 911 Club Sport Register.

I know from my own past experience that these very rarely come up for sale on the open market and usually sell quietly, with the Register putting interested buyers in touch with prospective sellers.

They are fantastic cars, and often under-estimated by people who don't know them. They were more highly modified than many people realise, built in very small numbers and make a superb road or track car without too many compromises. Less extreme than a 964RS, but very close in feel and spirit to the 2.7RS.

Prices are around c.£30k, but the best low mileage examples are closer to £40-45k (and I know that several have sold in this bracket).

Good luck

3.2 clubsport mods:

deletion of rear seats
lighter heating system
lighter sound system
lighter wiring harness
ligher bumper mountings
lighter space saver wheel
no coating on fuel tank
modified front bumper
engine blueprinted
lighter hallow intake valve stems
modified DME raising peak RPM to 6800+
modified engine mounts
modified gearbox mounts
modified air filter
LSD fitted
short shifter
different 4 + 5 gear ratios
bilstein dampers
6x16 front and 7x16 rear wheels
205/55 and 255/50 tires

(list stolen with great thanks and appreciaton from Tony Cortlett's excellent Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera book from www.velocebook.com)

You need to refer to the Porsche Technik Bulletin of the time which had several pages of modifications relating to the CS.

Tony's excellent book only summarised the notable differences.

Even my '84MY carrera has Bilsteins all round as it is a sport model.

I've seen CS engine or tranny mounts listed on Pelican Parts, not sure which they were.

Of course, all these differences are not worth the price difference in reality. Please note I'm not saying the CS is not worth the price they are! I would love to own one but would be worried about it getting damaged.

From DDK

I actually ordered one back in October 1987 from Maltin Porsche in Henley, Oxfordshire, but I didn't take delivery. The invoice price was £34,389.98

I have the original spec sheet which was just a photo-copied sheet from Porsche GB.
