Buying a Porsche 912

Hello All,

Hopefully someone can help, I am going to look at a 1967 Porsche 912 Coupe tomorrow.

The car has had a recent bare metal re-spray and the buyer insists that there is no corrosion on the car at all, he does state that a new speedo cable is needed, gearbox remote linkage bushes need replacing and the carpet underneath the bonnet needs replacing.

I am going to have an experienced (classic car) mechanic look over the car for me - he does not know the specifics in regards to old Porsches. What pointes can I give him?

I have downloaded the buyers guide here http://www.912register.co.uk/The%20Car/buyinga912.html

Does anyone have any more suggestions / or links to buyers guides.

Thanks very much in advance

Andy

Hi Andy,
There are many many things too numerous to cover in the scope of this Forum that is why I started the Register page, which you have found, good detective work!. I would personally forget anyone who has no knowledge of old Porsches as the cost will be not to far removed from a Porsche specialist.

Get a Porsche Specialist... end of story, unless your guy is free, but then get a Porsche specialist anyway.

Please don't be in a rush either.

There are lot's of good books to look out for especially the Duane Spencer one (see books page of website) you can get that from Club shop usually, or Amazon.
here

Happy hunting and welcome!

Ask away if you have any more questions!
Cheers
Gavin

I'd echo that opinion - definitely get a Porsche specialist. Where are you located maybe we can recommend someone.

Thanks for the reponses - I have decided to calm down a bit and take my time, if the one I am looking at is still there on Sunday I'll go and have a look with a mate of mine (he has re-built a couple of VW's over 12 years)

I am now also armed with 'The Complete Porsche 912 Guide' by D Spencer, which has a great buyers guide - even mentions not to use a VW expert...

I'm based in Southend-On-Sea, Essex - I have been given a couple of contacts but as is the way with these types of purchases, most cars are going to be out of town so I will have to rely on common sence and 'my mate'!

Ta, Andy

Thanks Murry - can you give me his number if you have it, please send to (travling_andy@hotmail.com)

Yellow would not be my first choice - my missus has just purchased a 94 MX-5 in Yellow, people would have to wear sunglasses to walk past our drive!
