Buying a Used 997

Hi

I am considering a used 997s, don't know which one yet but it will be from an OPC, around 55-60k budget.

Would you recomend I get an independent inspection of any vehicle considered? If so, could someone recomend a decent one in the Midlands area.

Thanks

If you're buying from an OPC I would have thought the checks that the car must pass to become a Porsche Approved Car and get the 12 month Porsche warranty would mean that an independent inspection would be unnecssary, unless, of course, you don't trust the OPC......

You'd be right about not trusting, not for any particular reason, its just OPC's are profit making companies who wouldn't hesitate in shafting a punter and 55-60k is a lot of money so I'd rather have some peace of mind.

I'm talking about thinks like body repairs and the like....something I know nothing about and couldn't spot myself.

i know one of the guys who independently tests porsche for a living.he says that opc`s also have their used cars tested in the same way and also by independent chaps like him-that price is reflected in the price that opc`s charge for their approved used cars.
however if you want to pay twice for the same thing then thats up to you entirely....

I would expect that buying from an OPC must be the safest way of obtaining a used Porsche, and I would interrogate the history with them. They should be able to give you chapter and verse on the service history and may know the previous owner(s) especially if the car came from them in the first place. As for accident damage, ask the dealer to check this too, if they haven't had the car from new themselves. Minor accident damage is no big deal anyway (new panels, decent paint job etc). Finally you've got the warranty to fall back on if any major problems crop up. If you can get the details of the previous owner call him/her.

What do OPCs do when cars that are independently checked have problems such as evidence of some nasty body repairs etc? I am assuming that they must sell them on??

2 questions:

Does the V5 show previous owners, if so will the OPC have this?

Anyone heard of / dealt with Autobahn Porsche, if so any feedback.

Thanks

Harry

V5 shows the previous registered keeper and there name and address. If the car has been with Porsche a while then the likelyhood is that they will be the previous registered keeper as far as I am aware.
V5 also shows number of former registered keepers if more than 1, but no details other than the number of former keepers.

OPC's should let you look at the log book / service history which should have previous owner details too.

OPC tend to move on any part-ex's that aren't up to standard or don't have FPSH.
You also have recourse to them and support of Porsche GB at Reading to resolve any later problems + 12 months additional warranty factored into the price so I wouldn't bother with a PPI.

IMHO

when does the OPC do the check? When the car comes in, or when the car goes out? Typically a car will sit with an OPC for some time and things can happen in that duration. Also, in my experience, OPCs use their approved stock for prospective customer test drives, all of which tend to involve more spirited driving and very little proper warming of the engine. Another example I've experienced is a demo of the PSE system on a used car from cold with lots of reving from rest to 7000 rpm.

A 911 is intended for spirited driving and once you have done Millbrook you realise just how strong the car is. That said, the OPC cars that I would personally avoid would be one where the 1st reg keeper is Porsche GB or Porsche dealer as they will be Porsche Driving Day / Demo's or even worse 24 hour test drive cars where they have been subject to hard driving on cold engines day in day out.

I would ask to see the car on a ramp and use a light.

Looking at a car at eye level you will be able to see all.

What are you checking for, if you are not a mechanic ? Really anything that does look straight fluid links scrapes etc. Take yout time at least 30 minutes.

Thanks for your valued replies.

One of the 997's i am considering does not have park assist - which I would like. Has anyone had a system retro-fitted, if so how was it / how much?

yep i had one fitted on my 996 18 months ago by camtune godalming-worked perfectly but did cost about£450-discreet etc etc but effective!!

I used to think you wouldn't need a PPI if you were buying from OPC til I read the thread on the GT3 forum about a silver 2003 GT3 at the end of last yr. Purchaser was eventually able to reject it and get his Boxster part-ex back after getting Porsche GB involved. Not the quality of car you'd expect from OPC.
