Hi,

My brother has just rang to say he is looking at a 1982 Lux tomorrow.
Anything in particular he should be looking out for?

Look for any sings of soneone having messed about with the electrics. If they have, walk away. Open the luggage compartment, lift upthe mat at each side that covers the spaces behind the wheel arches and make sure that these are dry and free from rust as the sunroof rain gutters empty through pipes going through there. Check the oil for signs of contamination from water. Cylinder head gaskets have a habit od going after 1000K miles. Check the clutch as a replacement is a bind. A whining noise from the transmision while moving is not a problem and seems to be standard.
Good luck....

I think I could accept the head gasket going at that mileage [:D] [:D].

Check the footwell behind the front seats. Water can collect there for any number of reasons. My 944s used to fill up due to a leak from a poorly sealed immobiliser wire. Check the windscreen for leaks by looking at the egde of the dash with the door open. Streaking here can indicate water leaking in. Check the soundness of the metalwork around the front beam jacking points, a raised section underneath the floor, behind the wheel-arch. Look to see if the rubber plugs are in the rear brake back plates. If they are missing there is every likelihood that the adjusters will be seized. Ease the carpet back around the front seat bolt holes and look for cracks caused by metal fatigue. The anchored bolts readily pull out if the floor is split. Lift up the base of the gear lever gaiter and look for relative movement between the lever and the shift rod as you rock the lever sideways. Too much wear here can make it difficult to engage 5th gear. Start the engine and switch on the headlights, heater, rear screen and fog lights. the voltmeter should still read over 12 volts.
