Buying and Price Advice for a 1998 Boxster 2.5 - Help/Comments needed a.s.a.p.

Hi,

I have been searching/previously posted and looking for a RHD 968 Cab with circa 20,000 miles on the clock. They do not exist!!

Wanted to run this query across Boxster members. I am talking to a guy with a 1998 zenith blue 2.5 with 19,000 miles from new and he is the second owner. It has Lux Pack and Climate control, 17" wheels, climate with a price then of some £40+ when new. It has a full Porsche Service history and not a mark/ding on it

I know the market is depressed at the moment. He will not accept a penny less than £10k. What do you guys think? Will a well looked 986 drop much more than that? I only do at the most 2,000 miles a year on this type of Sunday car and wondered as well, would it keep its money? Should I hold out for a 968 even?

All advice/guidance appreciated?

Brian

Whilst low mileage looks attractive i'd want to see what work has been done - you could end up with a car full of failing bushes, drop links, perishing tyres, wheel bearings etc.

I watched a W reg 986 3.2S with full leather and 18s go through ebay last week for £9100 - 50k miles on the clock and full PSH.

Think £9k is more the mark for that 2.5 - if it really is a minter and a keeper for you (5 years ?) then its probably no worse a buy depreciation wise than a 968.

Hi Black80XSA,

Just had a full Porschetek major/£450 service and I spoke to the guys and said it was basically one of the best they have seen. Everything new in the car and also 4 brand new tyres.

So.............with that info...........how do you think £10k stacks up? It is purely as a good weather car and I would do no more than 2k miles per year probably. If I kept it a couple of years and put minimal miles on it, how would it fair in keeping its money?

Let us know what you think?

Brian

Imo as has been mentioned, definately get a leggier 'S' instead of this low mileage car. The early 2.5s sometimes had engine problems that won't reveal themselves at such low mileage. The 2.5 is imo underpowered and relatively slow by today's standards. The 'S' comes with lots of extra goodies as standard eg larger brakes. If you're not putting much mileage on it why bother paying a premium for a low mileage car?
