Buying C26 3.6 turbo

Quick response needed! I have just had a PPI done on a nice low mileage car. It checks out well with no leaks and compression readings of between 122-130. It is a C26 import
and RHD. Should this make it less valuable than a UK car ? The price is a non - negotiable 38k.Any advice welcome - i will be checking the board all day!

Presume this is a 964 3.6T and by the price the car is absolutely pristine, resaleable colour and with a low mileage of around 20-30k. You would expect an import to be a few k cheaper than equivalent UK car though you may be lucky if FSH with receipts and it is presumably an ex relative or even Sultan of Brunei car then you may be okay.

Have you the compression tests for each cylinder as a compression ratio of 122 is a bit on the low side, not life threatening, and may be indicative of lack of use. Who did the PPI and what did they say about the 122. What was the leakdown percentages by cylinder

Hi Gordon - thanks for your input. Yes it belonged to the Sultan of Brunai.Came to UK 3 years ago.Used for 1 year and mostly stored since.Horizon Blue.12k miles.I am trying to contact the technician at the OPC for % figures .He thought 122-130 was ok compression.Should be able to quiz him very soon.cheers

Have now spoken to the mechanic , certainly no expert, who didnt know about % leakdown figures, they just have a green amber and red idiot gauge! No serious issues found but im thinking of taking up the £750 OPC warranty offer!

John
122-130 is probably an okay test but depends how many were 122, ? where does amber kick in by the way..

If you can get the £750 annual warranty (and it covers the engine by mileage and not age) for a number of years, then that would take away most of my concerns about the test, I presume you had a good test drive and that it would have been pretty scary even to a 930 owner. If you have any concerns, then have a local specialist that knows his Turbo's inspect , if neccesary agree to purchase subject to the Independant inspection.

Ref History, Mileage, Price and I presume a stack of stamps and bills then £38k is not to bad for a 12k car, which I'm presuming is immaculate.

at the end of the day its how you feel you know that most Turbo's are fairly bullet proof

More details; Cyl 1- 122
2- 124
3- 122
4- 128
5- 128
6- 130 It transpires warranty only on cars under 9 years
Have you got one of these cars Gordon? cheers

Sorry wasnt online this weekend, have a 993 TT as per picture.
Will ask a specialist later re your results and get back to you

Thanks Gordon, now i remember reading your comparisons before deciding on the 993.
Well i bit the bullet and put a deposit down.Meanwhile JCT are doing a service on the car and hope to God they dont miss anything expensive! Gmund cars are buying my 930 on thursday so i hope to have the 964 in my garage for the weekend....

I sold the 930 for £21k which was a fair dealer price i think.I dont have the 964 yet though... im hoping
to get it on a dyno test this week. What do you think of the compression figures - engine was warm by the way.

21 wasn't too bad from a dealer.

As for the compression, at least they are fairly even/equal.

I am not sure if they are very worthy though, some people say you should test them COLD and some people say they should be tested HOT. Also some faults do not occur unless you test them with the engine RUNNING.

When I had a PPI carried out on my 3.2 the guy checked them cold, he even went back to the car at a later date as the car was warm. When I told a mechanic sometime after about having this test he thought that the engine should have been hot, he is not a Porsche mechanic though.

I have never done this test on any of my Porsches myself, I have a gauge but the hose fell off it and it is unlikely that I would want to have the engine rebuilt unless I had to.

Also to do this test you have to remove a spark plug, if carbon deposits fall off where the plug is disturbed and get onto a valveseat the compression will be low.

Talked to a couple of experts ( Bob Watson & JZ Machtech ) who said that the engine should be hot but that without a cylinder leakdown test as well the compression figures were no guarantee of a healthy engine. As i had asked for the OPC to do this it is has now been returned for them to complete the job on monday....

The X88 was an optional factory engine upgrade available on the 94 model year cars.Minimum 25 bhp
extra power though some say nearer 35bhp.

Sounds like the 964 turbo S engine - anyone know what the mods are?

Johnny Boy,
yes, I was also going to ask what the mods are? And how would you know whether yours had it, is it itemised on the original spec/Bill of Sale? I also had only heard of it on the (special and very rare) Turbo S.

Hi Mike
I knew I had the X88 info somewhere....take a look at the following:
http://www.flachbau.com/x88.html
Don't be confused by the fact that it is a slant nose site. The question that Mark raises is what happened to the surplus X88 engines that didn't go into designated Turbo S models?
The ex Chris Harris yellow LHD 964 turbo 3.6 that was sold last year is the only car that I know of in the UK that has this mod. If there are others, I'd like to know.
Cheers
John
