Buying from OPC

I quite fancy an '03 C4S, in silver or grey with around 15-20k on the clock. What is the forum verdict on PCM (a 'must-have' for resale purposes or not) and what are peoples' opinions regarding depreciation if I keep a vehicle for a couple of years and bearing in mind the introduction of the new C4S in October.

You mean PSM I think. It has saved my bacon a few times. I certainly wouldn't buy another 996 without it.
Re residuals. Just buy the car. Your buying the car because you love to drive not because it's an investment.
If you want investment in any car then you will have to buy a old classic and garage it.
If you wait until the new C4s then something else will be due to come out and so it goes on. Go get it and enjoy.

I prefer the C2 over the C4 for a better driving experience. But that's JMHO.

PCM (Sat Nav) is useful, but not one of the better systems. PSM (Porsche Stability Management) is standard on the C4, optional on the C2, and very worthwhile.

Like Scouser, I'd prefer a C2 with PSM than a C4/C4S, but you can't have a C2 with the wide body. PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust) is highly recommended

Best buy would probably be a private purchase - an OPC supplied, low mileage, nicely spec'd example with extended Porsche warranty. There are some cossetted cars out there.

I think depreciation will be similar for all models. Remember a new 997 C4S will be c.£75k spec'd up, and a nice used 996 C4S is reasonably attractive value at c.£55k

PCM gives you the colour screen, which is used for trip computer, integrated phone operation (if fitted), CD-autochanger operation (if fitted), radio operation, sat nav operation.
IMO it is better to have it than not. It will make resale easier. I read somewhere else it is worth a grand on the price - not sure if this is true. I prefer the look.
Some aftermarket sat navs may be better, but it's original equipment and fully integrated with the other gubbins.

As for depreciation - you lose 5K if you drive it out the showroom, since this is the difference between trade and OPC retail. The biggest hit (the 1st year) is already taken care of, but I would still guess you'll lose 5-10K over the next 2 years. So if you pay 50 now, it'll be worth 35-40 in 2 years. I think hoping for more than 40 is optimistic.

It's hard to be sure, but I don't think there will be a big shortage of them to push the prices up, and the economy is not so certain. I think you need to be realistic/slightly pessimistic, then if you can do better you'll be smiling.

My last car had PCM and it was one of the only things the OPC said was worth anything, so I do beleive it will make a difference to selling the car, not in financial return but making it alot easier and quicker to move on.
As PCM becomes standard on various makes and models I think as time goes on it will become the normal, bit like ABS was a few year back...
