Buying my first Porsche experiance.

Now buying ones first Porsche 911 should be an unforgettable experience, and so it definitely was for me, but alas, for all the wrong reasons!

I had first seen the car of my dreams when it was being sold, as an ex demonstrator by Porsche Centre in Nottingham some fourteen months earlier, when it sold very quickly.

Now coincidentally, this very same car reappeared in a Pistonheads advert at the beginning of last November. Not wishing to lose the car a second time, I made contact with the garage concerned, one xxxxxxx, whose business traded under the erroneous and laughable banner of "TREATING CUSTOMERS FAIRLY" .The salesman with whom I dealt, was perfectly polite and helpful throughout. I had explained that it would be a condition of purchase that my wife would need to be in full agreement in what would be a major expenditure.
As an added inducement to buy, I next received an unsolicited email from xxxxxxxx offering to deliver the car to me. The email offer was described as "thinking outside the box"¦." Fine, thank you I thought, that was the clincher.

I next spoke to the salesman and agreed on this basis to take the car and a card deposit payment made with numbers given.

My next call from the garage was from the Sales Director to say that the MD did not want to deliver the car free to London -----and furthermore the word "free" had not appeared in the offer email, which was of course true---but why send the email? And what about the matter of taking the deposit? I was told this had not been "put through" so technically they had not taken the deposit!!!!"¦"¦to me these sounded like weasel words, I then sent them an email to explain that being Sunday, I could not get any legal advice, but that I would get back to them first thing on the Monday. Sure enough later that same day back came a "WITHOUT PREJUDICE" email , containing a complete fabrication of what was actually said. Why lie? The whole exchange at their end was being conducted with a bunch of amateurs, who were making promises they could not keep. Their shadowy MD was not supporting his sales team, and the loser was inevitably, the customer, in this particular case myself.

So, because I had set my heart on the car, & going against all my natural instincts, I decided to pay for and collect the vehicle myself. Collecting the car would also give me the opportunity to confront the company's MD, for some sort of face to face explanation. As you might guess, when the opportunity arrived he was indisposed, on an important call I was told, probably trying to pacify some other badly treated customer!
Finally, if xxxxxxxx regard themselves as the "UK's Number one prestige and sports car specialist", it does not say much for the rest. The sheer logic of their treatment of me, with so many expensive cars to sell, among them many Porsches, is hard to fathom. They were a very BAD experience for me personally, and if this summary helps someone else avoid this amateurish operation, in beautiful xxxxxx, then maybe some good will have come out of it.

In the meantime, importantly, I am fully enjoying the use of my Christmas present to myself and hopefully never need to give xxxxxxxx another thought!

Edited to remove Trader's name, please read the name-and-shame rules!

Hi David,

Sorry the experience wasn't a good one, but the forum rules don't allow naming of traders in this sort of situation.

Hope the car is better than your buying experience, or your first forum post, sorry! [:)]

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience with this company David.

Unfortunately, the rules of the forum don't allow you to "name and shame" the company, so expect one of the Administrators either to delete your post or, at best, the company's name.

Hopefully your future experiences with the new car will compensate for the very unprofessional introduction to Porsche ownership. Why not join the Club and enjoy your car in company with like-minded enthusiasts in the Cambs and Beds Region?

Jeff

Edit: Paul just beat me to it..!

I'm sorry, I don't get why we feel too scared to flush out poor traders. How does this help other members avoid the problem and protect them in the future? Surely that's one of the functions of a club and it's forum...to protect it's members. As long as the thread doesn't turn into a witch hunt (and that's the moderators job) I don't see the problem, but maybe our lawyers have other ideas.

I'm a moderator on another Porsche forum and there poor suppliers and bad practices are outed. They're not beaten with a stick or dragged through the streets, but the facts are laid out. On several occasions this has flipped the other way where other replying members have said the complainant has been foolish or naive. It does open debate, as long as the complaint is objective it shouldn't be a problem.

Frankly, without the details, this post is worthless and might just as well been deleted.

Where is xxxxx? That might throw some light on things.

Hi Steve,

This has been done to death. The moderators merely enforce the rules: the Club members made them, and can always vote to change them. Please let's not have this descend in to people trying to "hint" who the dealer is, just to give the volunteers a load of hassle? [:D]

Not picking on the original poster here, I'm sure it's entirely genuine, but for all you or I know he's joined this forum just to name a trader for bad practice. He could be a rival, or exaggerating the facts, or it could be a one-off genuine mistake. We can't be sure, so have to err on the side of caution. So often there turns out to be two sides to a story.

There's also the legal issue. The poster himself, as well as PCGB, could be liable if the dealer wanted to take action, and so we have to prevent that happening.

Other forums might do things differently, but also not have the same legal requirements as us. We are a large, prestigious company, affiliated to a premier brand within the largest car company in Europe. Lawyers would have a field day if they chose to target us for allowing a false accusation against a business. Many forums are entirely independant: no-one really "owns" them, and there might be no assets behind them. They can get away with more, of course.

The right people to talk to are the ROs and RSs. If they get consistent reports of problems they will take traders off their list of recommendations, for instance. Locally, they may well even know the people concerned and could have a word. That has far more influence than internet comments, where people are naturally dubious about the authenticity of reviews etc.

Paul, I get what you're saying and personally I don't care one way or the other. I think it's a sad enditement of this place when free speech is censored because we are too afraid of the consequences. That will lead to a bland, sterile environment where nothing controversial can ever be discussed for fear of reprisals, legal or otherwise. How sad and surely not what the Romans or Greeks had in mind.

Hi David

I'm sorry to read of your first experience with Porsche, not a good start, well not so much Porsche but your buying experience.

Paul is quite right we cannot name Suppliers on the forum since it will make it a 'free for all' for anyone with or without a grievance to pile in as some do. This forum is extremely well policed by Paul and other moderators and make it a place to come and hear others views, get technical advice and have fun with other like minded members.

I note you posted under Region 24 Cambs and Beds but would suspect you live in the London area. As Jeff - Motorhead said in his post the finest way to enjoy you Porsche is to join the club. We have approx 13 thousand members, thirty one Regions who hold Regular monthly meetings and events. We also have national events at various venues eg Brands Hatch 2014 next year Althorp House which really are grand gatherings.
We also drive abroad for long weekends, the list is endless. We also have Registers for different model cars where you can get technical advice on cars etc. Offers from sponsors and the Porsche Post a monthly magazine which really is IMO better than those we find on the news stands.

So treat yourself, its Christmas, join the Club.

Enjoy your car the club and Turkey

No it wasn't them Whiston, though having been to look at a couple of cars at their place I wouldn't have given them my money. See rogue traders!
