Buying Track Tyres - Advice Pls

I am about to buy a set of sticky tyres for the RS, wheels are OE 18" 3 pce speedlines.

I have previously used Mich PSCs and found them to be very "digital" at the limit, the tyres I am considering are Pirelli Corsa R (I think this is the track tyre?), Toyo R888 and Dunlop DZ02G. I would appreciate some pointers. I like the look of the Dunlops but I am not sure that they are available in my current sizes 225/40 (nearest looks to be 235?) and 265/35 x ZR18.

Any advice on brand characteristics/optimal sizes welcome.

I am planning on using the 18" speedlines on track as I think these will be better on track than my 17" OE (non-mag) cup 1s (also 8"/9.5"), am I right?

I am doing the same moving from Cup1 s to Mag 18" Speedlines. I am going for MP Cups as these are the best tyres I have used on track bar slicks.

Same tyre size as yours 265/35 and 225/40 18s and Michelin supports the track days I do so a no brainer if you are unlucky enough to get a puncture.

Toyo R888's are the way to go! You run them (on a 964RS) at about 32 psi hot (start out a trackday at 27 psi cold and work from there). They are in a different league to either the Corsa's or Cups and I believe that in the UK they are cheaper as well. This isn't just based on my "seat of the pants" evaluation but on tests done by a local Porsche race team. Personally, I really like the tyres and have now been using them for trackdays and races for the last 8 months. An added bonus is that reports say they are also better than Cups in the wet, about the same as the Corsa's.

Over here in Oz, the Michelin's have a poor reputation on the lighter Porsches. Barely anybody runs them for either trackdays or sprints. They are a bit more polular on the heavier Porsches (GT3's etc) but even then, the general view is that there are better tyres around that are cheaper.

Hope you had a good day out at North Weald.

I've not tried Toyos but I do like the Dunlops! I also run them at about 32psi hot and the latest set I had were the R rather than the H compound (which is slightly harder). IMHO for 20 minute sessions I think they provide better grip than the MPCs but much longer than that and they do tend to go off which the MPCs don't. On and past the limit they're both good but the MPCs are probably better in damp or greasy conditions.
 
Thanks Tim, North Weald was great (apart from getting a puncture!), will post a report soon.

As regards tyres I think I will give the Toyo R888s a try, the main dealer Demon Tweeks is just down the road from me so that kind of makes it easier as well.

Will let the group know how I get on, next track day should be the new Anglesey circuit on 6th October followed by Oulton on the 30th.

Kevin, I'm also booked at Oulton on the 30th so will come and say hello and find out what you think of the Toyos. I'm contemplating getting a second set of wheels to fit track tyres on and have received similar advice about going for Toyos. What colour RS do I look out for?
 
Ferrari Yellow with yellow speedlines. Re tyres you may also want to speak to 9m or Steve at JZ Machtech as both those guys have views, the Toyos are not so cheap at £650ish a set on 18" wheels but they are still cheaper than Michelin PSC or Pirellis and are supposed to be good.
