Buzzing radio...

Folks - I am a little stumped on this one so words of wisdom gratefully received!

I fitted an Alpine Ipod tuner head unit to my 993 the other week and all went well connection-wise. The strange thing is I get a buzz from the speakers even when the engine is not running! If it was buzzing with the engine on I would assume a faulty earth connection but this does it with just the ignition on!

Anyone seen the same and fixed it? I am wondering if it is only the passenger door speakers but will check again tonight....very annoying!

unit is the Alpine xda200...

Thanks,

Mark

Snap ! I had the same unit fitted to my car three weeks ago. I kept the original unit, of course.

So far no problems here - I really love it. No more CDs all over the car.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

Thanks guys....

OK - sadly it looks like one speaker buzzing (and it does it in tune to the engine revs - nice touch!) which still has me a little stumped! Assuming there is an earth problem with a speaker now, but before I rip the innards of my door off and shave my knuckles one more time when I remove the head unit - any more ideas??

cheers,

Mark

Rather than strip the door apart what about pulling the head unit out and swapping the left/right outputs to see whether the buzz swaps side?

Not sure whether it makes any difference to diagnosis, but are you still running the speakers through the amp?

(Fitted an iDA-X100 to mine the other week without any buzzing - mine is a C4S as well so I am using the pre-outs to the amp.)

Good plan! I will swap the speakers and see where it goes! Not sure what you mean about them going through the amp as all I did was swap the head unit (have the grazed knuckles to prove it! but I see a weekend project looming!

I love these 993's as they keep you occupied ha ha, my 996 was TOO easy to live with [:D][:D]

I have a sony head unit and 6 play CD in the front. I get a ticking noise with mine which increases decreases with engine RPM. Just had a dyno check done and its only kicking out 253HP at the engine.
Possibly HT leads breaking down.. causing the hP decrease along with the ticking noise..?

Hmmm...well the buzzing is only from one speaker still!

Quick question - does anyone have the stereo wiring diagram handy?? I can't 'isolate' the speaker as it comes in via a multibloc and without resorting to the 'ripping off door card' I am at a loss! Tried earth in and earth disconnected and makes no difference. The buzzing is there in the speaker whether the engine is on or off so must be some kind of connection issue but which kind?

Of course, I hardly have it on as I listen to the engine instead but it is now one of those things I MUST fix rather than absolutely need to ha ha

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark

This sounds like the same fault my friend Fred has on his Turbo. The stereo was changed and then he got a buzzing from the N/S rear speaker all the time the ignition was on even if the Stereo was turned off. It turned out that the feed to the Porsche Amp behind the stereo was connected to the permanent feed rather that the switch feed. That was changed and now it only happens when the stereo is on and the ignition/engine running on the N/S rear speaker. Have swapped the wires between the two rear speakers and the fault follows. Not got any further yet. I'm now hoping someone will have the answer here!!

It really is bizarre!

Now the Porsche Amp is something I was not aware of until recently! How do I get to that with removing skin from hand? I am assuming it is buried somewhere in the dashboard and probably requires specialist tools or something [;)]

What I was going to do next was plonk the old head unit in and see if I could perceive the buzz from that one. If it does not buzz then maybe it is the 'switch feed' plus an earthing issue. Any help with moving to the switch feed would be great - then I am at least going forward!

Thanks Graham,

Mark

Hi Mark

The Amp was squeezed in behind the stereo loose. A bitch to get the stereo back in!!
The switch wire is normally a blue wire from the back of the stereo. Sometimes there are 2 blue ones, but may have a stripe. One is for Electric Aerial and the other is for connecting to amps etc. Check your manual with the stereo.

Hmmm...

I have never checked / looked for it, but I thought the amp was under one of the seats?

There was certainly no evidence of an amp behind the head unit when I changed mine recently (and I know it has one because it is a C4S which comes as standard with the upgraded stereo package; as does the turbo).

OK - now thoroughly frustrated!

Have tried the old Sony head unit back in and that buzzes also from one speaker. So, head unit being the problem is eliminated.

Tried disconnecting the aerial - that stops the buzz but only until the head unit comes back into contact with its retaining cage in the dashboard - then buzz is back! Only one blue lead from the amp and that seems to need to be connected.

Buzz is only the nearside front door speakers so I really am not sure what to try next short of paying an ICE specialist to take a look. I am sure it is an earth problem of some description but have tried various cables in and out and no change....Grrrrr....

Any more suggestions? If not I will call in to a specialist and see what they can find. Will report back if anything interesting...
