Has anyone seen this month's Classic & Sports Car? There is an article in there on 'budget' Porsches and if I have read the conclusion correctly they believe the 944 to be the best front engined proposition in terms of performance, handling and cost. They looked at cars in the range of £1,500 to £15,000 and looked at a 924S, 944 S2, 914, 928, 968, 912, 911 SC, 911 3.2 Carrera, Boxter 2.5 and a 356B. Makes interesting reading.

Just nipping out for lunch now and I'll grab a copy. The word on Titanic is that Nick Fearn is in it, and Ed said his 924S is also featured.

Got a copy now. The "top 3 troublespots" supposedly are:[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Leaking transaxle causing the mounts to fail. Really? Not heard that before[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Rattling gearboxes which will eventually need a rebuild. Erm. they all do that, sir.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]As with the 924 poorly maintained cars are subject to cambelt failure so look for service history. Or change the belts when you buy it.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]What about rusty sills, sticking brake calipers, corroding fuel lines over the rear beam, cam chains on 16V models etc? [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]I hope the rest of the article is a bit more informed than that box-out.[8|][FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

So who were the 944 experts that contributed to the article?

Considering the mileages our cars get through, I think the boxes are pretty solid - they might get a bit noisy but they do keep going.
My 147k 944 turbo gearbox is also much quieter than the boxes in either of my 924S's.

AFAIK cambelt failure on a 924 isn't a big deal as it's not an interference motor (although the 931 is)

Well the article thanks PCGB and the "model registrars". I can't imagine Paul Mc would have given the information they published without mentioning it or canvassing opinion here or on Titanic. Ditto Nick if he were asked as part of the car supplying deal.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Tha leaves the specialists also thanked: Export 56, Paul Stephens, Discount 9, Porscheshop, Autobarn, Northway Porsche (is he still alowed to call it that?) and ProMax.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Belinda has managed to get several copies so that we may have a signing session at Camp Nessie [;)]

Are you suggesting that I don't know anything at all and just ask you guys for information which I then pass on in order to receive the gratitude and adulation of the membership? [;)]

I certainly had no input into the article, but I must go and read it!

On the contrary, I was suggesting that you would know far better than give the misinformation they received and that you would give the flock a chance to add suggestions.

I guess we have to give them a break.
After all, when have you ever known a journalist get a story completely correct?

No idea where they got the "trouble spots" info but the info I did give them on my own car was not relayed 100% accurately in the article anyway.

Like most of these things, they rely on some of their own understanding, combined with a ten minute interview in a windy airfield car park which is scribbled down in a notebook and then re-interpreted later.

When all's said and done however, the '44 came out of it rather well I thought, and I have got a nice set of photos of the car :).

.....Are you suggesting that I don't know anything at all .....

Is it that obvious!

Having now merely scanned the pages it would appear that the 944 comes out on top [:D].

I much like the comment:-
"...and in turbo form muster enough poke to fighten the current Porsche model range." [:)][:)][:)]

My gearbox did'nt keep on going, it lasted about 2yrs with the normal noise then decided to lock up at high speed and stoped me rather quick[&o]

That sounds exciting! Not exactly common though (thankfully).[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Do you know what failed specifically? Was it related to the noise?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I got another box out of a later S2 on the net at 24/7 spares, £275 all in, and this one as no noise at all, so after fitting it, i popped the drivshaft pot out the box and removed the 13mm(lots of them) and found lots of teeth in places where they shouldn't have been, the sun&planet wheels add decided to become one, Doh! I could only put it down to the noise as there was no other indication that there was a problem, and i've driven a lot of 944s and its the same noise they all have, there aint many that dont have it, except my S2 box[:)]
