C2 drop links

Hi

Just wondered if anyone had changed front drop links on a C2 (1998) - think mine are in need of doing and wonered if there was a "procedure" or guide out there- I believe they are a bit more tricky on the C2 than C4 cars.

Having just done mine on my C4, the only thing that could be a problem is getting the link undone on the strut. I was lucky and was able to undo them and swap out for new in a few minutes. I have read others have got to the point of cutting the old one off and drilling out the bolt. Spend a few minutes squirting Plusgas or similar on the offending parts a day or so before you are going to strip them out - good luck
 
It's a 5 min job, IF the old one comes out :)

If not it took me 6 hours of bashing, lubricating, twisting and in the end cutting to get it out.

The large bolt on the top of the link doubles as a pinch bolt for the strut.

The passenger side took 6 hours, the drive side? less than five minutes, then I say in the history that one had only recently been changed so was still good!

Plenty of WD40 seems the way to go on this one, a few days before then perhaps a bit of heat !
 
Coincidentally, just had mine changed on Saturday for the MOT but my garage did them both along with the service and anti-roll bars and MOT - £347 all-in.

Had a go at the front links on my C2 today.

Not a good result - got all the nuts undone, as id soeked everything in WD40 a few days ago. Bottom bolt came out fine however top pinch bolts are not budging after hours of hammering etc.

Cut the links off so I could get socket on the other side of the pinch bolt to try get the bolt turning however still rounded off even with a socket. Wound the bolt on to protect threads at other end and hours of bashing away to no avail

Dont want to hit the thing any harder as next thing I imagine is a lump of aluminium breaking off the strut - so ive admitted defeat for now

Hopefully the car is still driveable without the links for short distance / normal speeds, anti roll bar is still on and bolt is locked solid into strut so effectively no tie bars for the anti roll bar

Think im gonna enlist the help of a mate when he gets back from hols to have another go !!
 
Trick according to Sid at Porsche-torque is to heat it and heat it thee anion should loosen bolts not brute force and a bit ofwd40
 
Cheers, wasnt sure whether heat was a good idea, I thought that heating the bolt head / thread would cause expansion that might not be good for the aluminium housing.

Was wondering whether to apply heat from a gas blowlamp on the threaded end to get the bolt heated up then try with the hammer / WD40 again
 
Well a full day of heating, cooling, hitting with hammer, trying to get a turn on the bolt all to no avail !

Just managed to get some movement on the drivers side then the head of the bolt snapped off.

Tried drilling out, heating, cooling etc etc and im still stuck !!

These bolts are obviously well n truly welded in place !!
 
Get some Rost Of Ice. A german product and is very good 9and smells of Ralgex for some reason!). Heat is always best for these.
