C2 Value

Hi folks,

How much would you expect to pay for the following car:

1990 C2
110k miles
Full history
Very rough paint, badly resprayed at some point
Needs new window rubbers
Needs interior tidy and some re-trimming/carpet
New rear engine cover - nasty aftermarket spoiler on it

I'm having thoughts of buying it and having it restored, but need to know what it's worth. Seller is asking £12,700 for it.

I think about 10-10.5k

My advise would be to save your money and buy a better condition one. 15-18k should see you in a very nice usable example. You could easily spend 4k just on a respray plus the interior issues...

Don't let heart rule head and if unsure then walk away.

I have spent thousands on mine and mine was good at the start!

Just my view

Tim

Thanks, Tim.

You're probably right. My head is fried thinking about what car I want to buy next....driving me insane! Very few 964's come up for sale here in NI, and I don't have the time to go to GB to end up viewing a load of overpriced tat!

Hi, Depends on the rest of it I'd say.. Clutch, brakes, suspension, oil hoses. Ive had all these to do on my otherwise good looking and 'inspected by a specialist' car. The numbers start to get very large very quickly. The seller may not be prepared to take these realities into account in your negotiations.
Add paint, rubber, interior... Gut feel would have to be 'no' for that sort of money though.

Hi

I you want to talk about things you need to look for then I am happy to talk to you about 964's I have a lot of experience with them having done all the work on mine myself

£10 maybe £11k max if thats all that needs doing, your going to need £3-4k+v for a good respray due to the bad previous job

I agree with ct

Oil lines, leaks, brakes, clutch, engine tin the list goes on.

Everything costs loads to fix and unless you know them well the a inspection is a must.

I inspected mine myself and was very happy with it and still am 10 yrs later.

Yup, indeed. Been through a couple of 964's now and just getting the basics of mechanical and body in good condition is hard enough without wanting to 'improve' or get things how you want. With this, quite likely you could drop a further few thou at least in there on top of body - unless you plan on doing much yourself.

However, what is little taken in to account is not just the cost of getting it how you want, but the flippin time to get there! It's weekends and evenings of tinkering and fussing to sort things out and iron out the niggles...

Better to borrow more money (or have in reserve) and get the near the end result you want from the off. History and receipts and receipts (study everything) - without which you could bargain with if you want a potential project I guess. Gordon and CT are there, but I would maybe pay 9-10k max and face the music after! But in reality I'd probably keep looking...

The story of a 964 is to be found from under the car. Poor paint and cosmetics are easily sorted out for reasonable money. As already pointed out engine, tinware, oil system, suspension and brakes can take up thousands if they are needed. Saying all of that, 12k is at the very bottom of what you will pay for a C2 these days.

+1 on what ras62 says.

The popularity of 964C2s now means that tatty ones are £12K+ so I don't blame the owner holding out for what he is asking. However, the good news is that just about any money that you put into it will add to its value at the moment.

IMO, a sorted 964 is £20k - either in initial purchase price or price + fixing.

The advantage of buying a cheap one is that you can do the work to it over time and to your specification/standards. Plus you never know if the supposedly sorted £20k one has a ££££ round the corner.

Some good opinions on here, thanks chaps.

Values on these cars tend to be talked up on enthusiast forums though, personally I think the car is worth £10k, or at a push up to £11k if no big issues arise at inspection.

I'm considering getting a full inspection carried out to see exactly what is needed, then also have it looked at by a body shop. My plan would be a bare metal windows out respray in a different colour, new rubbers, new rear lights and reflector, wheel refurb, suspension refresh, replacement rear wing, new carpets, new seats (or refurb seats) etc.

I think I could possibly do this for £7-8k, but if the car needs a full engine rebuild and new clutch, then it's getting too expensive for me and the money would be better spent on a 993 C2.

While there is some truth in that, there has been a genuine increase in the interest in 964s in all forms of Porsche media over the last 18 months. Loads of threads on Pistonheads. Porsche magazines have been raving about the 964 recently. Even EVO singled out the 964 in last months 911 feature. Six months ago it was difficult to find a C2 for sale (they were quickly bought). There are more for sale at the moment, I suspect because some want to cash in on the current popularity.

I think you are being optimistic on doing that work for 7-8k tbh unless you can do the work yourself. You assume zero rust issues and the rest of the car needing nothing which again is being hugely optimistic.
If you want a nice car and judging by your posts this is your intention then I can almost guarantee you will end up spending £20k minimum. Found my car in NI as it happens.

A full bare metal respray is at least £5000 from a Porsche approved body shop. Rust will be back through the paint within 12 to 18 months if not sorted properly and no workshop will guarantee it will not be back unless they fully cut it out and re-weld which can be seriously expensive. if the car is in the condition stated it would seem fair to asume the mechanical parts have not been maintained to the usual standard also.

I have a lovely 964 that I bought for £14K, I have still spent £6.5K on it. You can keep spending almost forever to get them tip-top. Buy a good one to start with or it will be heart-ache!!!

I agree with all the above experiences, running a 964 is a money pit , I've spent a lot of money over the years and i do all the work myself , engine rebuild , suspension etc . After 7yrs im still spending money on it and im currently replaceing all the rear wheel bearings (not an easy task) and all the brakes for the 2nd time since owning it as I've worn them out.

I think your budget needs to be bigger ;-)

DIY engine rebuild 3 years cost me £7k see my link below .

Hi Ian,
Already read the magazine article and followed the Pelican Parts Forum info you posted. Great stuff, nice work.

Are only C2 values on the up........or are C4 following suit?

£10-12k for something that sounds as sorry as the one in this thread surprises me - in a good way of course given I'm not looking to buy!
