C2S air-con service?

I have a 10 plate C2S which is about to have its first service and the dealer is saying that Porsche now recommend that the air-con be serviced every two years at a cost of 200 quid. This seems a bit OTT on a two year old car, has anyone gone through a similar process with a dealer?

They ask but I only had a far cheaper disinfect & de-odourise treatment. I have just parted with my 07 plate car and the air con was working fine and had never been serviced. You get the same treatment from Audi and Toyota (2 other > 2 year old cars we own, but they all probably do it) about this 2 year thing but I take the view that if it is working OK and cooling well then leave it alone. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Not yet but you can bet that if you dont have it done they will say that you invalidate the warranty! It would be interesting to know what they actually do to the aircon as a `specialist' would probably check it for 50 quid.
I have heard of owners taking a pack of Mobil 1 to the service to avoid being overcharged. What about getting an independnet to do the the brake fluid 2 year change?

Un-believably the brake fluid change is cheaper than the air-con.

This is the email from the dealer when I queried but I suspect that the undesirable smell is down to something emanating from the dealer!

"The air conditioning service includes drain and measure of the current gas in the system and then a refill with the correct amount of gas including dye as the system will have lost gas during the last two years making it inefficient. We then check for any leaks which will show up because the dye would highlight this. Then the air conditioning ventilation system is treated to clear all the bad spores so that occupants breath in good quality air.
The Porsche 2 yearly air conditioning service takes up to 1.50 hours to complete. This is a Porsche recommendation and is why there is now a supplement to go into the service book to show that it has taken place.
Furthermore, if the air conditioning is not serviced you will eventually notice an undesirable smell that costs more money to clear it."

We have had Mercs in the past (still have one in fact) and never had this from them.

Never had AC serviced on any car and have kept most for 6 years plus. Mind you I run it at least once a month for an hour or so also. No smells ever.... Maybe I have been lucky. The issue of potentially invalidating a Porsche Warranty if you refuse is the part that I would like clarification on.

yeah, I wondered about warranty but I dont think it will affect it. I think I am going to refuse to have it done, I dont mind spending money if its needed but I htink this is pure upsell!

My two year car had a leaking and corroded nearside condenser which was replaced under warranty and thus the air con was recharged for nothing. This must be a very recent new recommendation by Porsche and it a new one on me!

Yes, I was told it was new and that a supplement would be issued to the service schedule but I think I will still give it a miss. I deffo resent spending 200 quid when I have never had to do that on any other almost new car

I just has my A/C regassed (after changing a rotten rad) at Kwik Fit for £49.
They don't get involved in anyway other than slotting the hose onto the A/C inlet and letting the machine run it's course for 45 minutes.
It measures all the elements your OPC does, and if it's not cooler (ie if there's a leak - there's no charge)
My A/C is perfect now.

I have just asked my PC about this. They say Porsche do recommend a two yearly service of the aircon, including a bacterial clean, but it is not in the service schedule. Cost - £99

Why not get the anti bacterial spray from Halfords for £10 then as Rodney did, go to KwikFit to regas for £50? If your car is not under warranty then an activated charcoal pollen filter from eBay is £12. I only use OEM/Porsche filters for everything else apart from the pollen filter which is not a critical item.
