C4 MAF replacement

Guys,

does anyone know how much an OPC charge to have the MAF replaced (Y2000 C4) and has anyone replaced this themselves, if so, how much of a job is it?

Hi BB,

It is a five minute job if you have the correct security torx spanner (see below) to remove the two retaining torx screws (fig 4) then unclip the electrical connector and remove the MAF (fig 3).

What isn't cheap is to replace the MAF. I regularly remove the MAF give it a squirt of electrical contact cleaner, let it dry and replace it. (you might want to try that before you buy another MAF). And make sure you replace with correct part as there are diferences.

£170!!

you're kidding, i paid £291 (with the 10% discount off) from an OPC last weekend. Fitted it and turns out the failed MAF has probably killed a lambda sensor too. Its booked into JZM on saturday.

the MAF is a doddle to take out and replace.

Taking into consideration the £291 part cost above, the OPC quoted me £550 to replace it for me!!!! what a joke ;-)
 
OPC has confirmed the MAF sensor (or MAFI sensor as they refer to it...) as needing replacing.

They've quoted £353.52, (plus £58.16 for the diagnostics) to replace it. This also includes "calibration".
Total of £411! Erk!

What calibration is required? I believed it was a simple item swap with no setup necessary...?

Are they simply trying to justify the huge costs for a 5 minute job, or is there more to it?
(they actually want the car ALL DAY in order for the engine to cool down, a they need to fit the new sensor in to a cold not hot engine).

It really is a 5 minute job. All you need is a T20 Security Torx driver. The connector used on the C4 is slightly tricky to unclip until you get the knack. The DME will automatically recalibrate itself when the new one is fitted, and you can do it with the engine hot or cold. I can't seem to find it in the 996 manual, but the 986 manual makes no mention of any calibration at all.

I think they are taking you for a ride.

edit: I just did a search on www.eurocarparts.com and the MAF for my 1998 C2 is only £149.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!
 
richard, i've just found the MAF on euro's website, its says "not for M620 version", what does that mean?

BB - its a five minute job and the unit calibrates itself, you literally have to undo two screws, pull the old MAF out, stick the new MAF in and do up the two screws. turn the engine on and then it'll calibrate itself. No other adjustment required.
 
M620 is e-gas (fly-by-wire throttle). Early cars like mine are cable throttle.

If you need one for a later car phone Euro Car Parts. If they don't have it in stock they will be able to get you one.
