C4 transmission tunnel photos

When adjusting my handbrake I wondered what was beneath the small rubber access "plate" in the transmission tunnel cover (behind the handbrake and under the cassette case/trinket tray). So of course I managed to lose the rubber cover into the transmission tunnel []

Easy job to remove the panel under the car and retrieve it, and I took a few photos whilst I was there. I found two things:
1) Perished gaiter around the U/J on the front wheel output drive shaft. Does anyone know what is involved in changing this ? Can it be done by breaking the shaft at the flexible joint, or is it engine and gearbox out/move ? I sometimes get a faint but annoying delayed "clunk" shortly after drive take-up in 2nd and 3rd and suspect it's coming from the FWD shaft U/J...
2) A rubber/plastic pipe with 4cm diameter rubber spacer (see arrow in first pic at link below) was floating free in the tunnel and could touch the drive shaft ! However, there was no evidence of rubbing. What is this and should it be flopping about ? I fitted a single tie wrap to constrain it slightly so that it can't touch any rotating parts.

Hi

That is indeed the gear linkage - the rubber tube that you are referring to is the throttle cable and the large donut shaped rubber spacer (that you have drawn a red arrow to on your first picture) is designed to prevent the throttle cable sheath itself rubbing through - so it is kind of sacrificial.

The gear change linkage doesn't rotate - so I wouldn't worry too much. Perhaps get someone to change gears whilst you are looking up from underneath the car to see it in action and put your mind at rest (obviously not while the engine is running)[;)]

Hope that helps

Thanks guys, that makes a lot more sense ! I now feel pretty stupid to have mistaken a gear linkage for a drive shaft [:)]
