c4s, good spec c2s or Gt3

Consikdering the above, I like the look of c4s but am worried that they may feel too capable and a little boring. The gt3 looks stunning and has the more durable 3.6. Im willing to spend about 75 on c2s or 82k on c4s, the same for gt3. I wont be taking it on track. The other factor is whether to hang on and wait for the facelift. What do people think.

Hi,

GT3 is a different animal from the standard Carreras - probably best to drive them all and see which suits you best

As mentioned above, the GT3 is a very different beast - they have made the 997 version easier to live with than the previous version, however it you don't intend to track the car then I'm not sure the GT3 is the right car for you. I think you also lose the rear seats, so practicality is reduced. In any case if you haven't got a GT3 already on order, you are probably looking at 9 month waiting list, unless you are prepared to pay more than market price to a speculator, or can find a dealer with a cancelled order.

I don't believe that the C4S is too boring - surefooted, yes, capable, yes - but not boring. It is true that the C2S is a very stable car, but for me driving in all weather conditions, the extra confidence that the 4-wheel drive provides is valuable. The C2S is more prone to oversteer, which may be a good or bad thing depending on when and where it occurs!!

£82k will get you a very highly specced C4S (mine was £79k and I have most of the sensible options.....)

I don't think you will see the facelift until 2008!

Try them all and then make your choice!

Personally, I think the new GT3 could be the best new 911 for many years. But, it depends how quickly you want it.

I think C2S and C4S build slots are pretty easy to get, but you might struggle to get a GT3 in the 2007 MY.

I'm not keen on 4wd or PASM on the standard cars. Best buy might be a C2 or C2S with 20mm lowered suspension (and PCCBs if you can bear the cost).

The 'facelift' C2S/C4S is at least a year away, and more likely two years away (Sept 08), despite the recent sightings.

Thanks for the replies chaps, I have been told that a certain dealer has a gt3 (not telling which one [:)])for a may 06 build slot. Time is not really an issue.
My own views are that the gt3 will be the best buy for me and that takes into account sheer grunt driver appeal looks and residuals but I am not sure that my other half with whom I will share the purchase is going to get on with it. Ive had the c2s for a day and was very impressed very easy to drive, easier than the 987s I own at present and my other half took to it like a duck to water. Ive posted the -20mm question on another post to see if it is much harsher.
The c2s seem to be taking a bit of a hit and that is without the facelift. I guess that is because of sheer numbers, there are pages of them on the used car locator but only 3 for the c4s.

In my opinion there is absolutely no point whatsoever in ordering a GT3 if you dont intend to track it. Where are you going to drive it to its potential? If on the public roads, you deserve everything the law will throw at you. The same really applies to the C2S with Sports suspension - if you intend exclusively for road use it is too firm. If you are going to track it, it is worth putting up with.
Personally I do not think there any point in owning a Porsche if all you are going to do is tootle around public roads.

Robin, I think you are really missing the joy of your Porsche ownership if you feel that way (IMHO) i.e.

You can have a lot of fun with GT3 or any Porsche on public roads and keep perfectly within the law (isn't that what we all do?). If you believe the sole purpose of the ownership of a road legal performance car is purely to attain the top speed, wherever possible, then you are really missing out.

I agree on the comfort i.e. sports suspension bit, if you are never going to track it but otherwise you can have a lot of sensible fun on the public roads and keep to every speed limit on any given stretch of UK public road.

Bax, go for whatever you are financially comfortable with and enjoy everything it has to offer, you only live once.

...now a GT3RS may be a bit of a waste if it is going to be used for Tesco shopping runs and evening dinners [;)]

Or conversly owning a Porsche if all you are going to do is track days, better a nice Caterham & a sensible road car!
Whilst we are at it, we had better forget all high performance variants of all makes of car, unless you track them . So no point in M3's M6's, Golf GTi's, Lamborgini's, Merc AMG's, Astons, Maserati's , Ferrari's, Audi RS's & S4's, Evo's, Subaru (if I could spell it), Bentleys, Lotus,, Noble, TVR, Pagani, XR Jags, blimey the list is getting too long & I am only just warming up, best ban the lot & get an electric thingy instead!

I can see where you are comming from and this is one of my problems, I want the best car I can afford. I personally think that the current c2s and c4s will depreciate quite a bit, I think the GT3 is a lot better bet. I dont really want to be tracking an 80k car, I do not want the expense track days bring ie tyres, brakes etc and the risk of seriously bending an 80k car. As I understand it the current GT3 can quite easily be used everyday, It will not be used for work therefor it will be used for spirited weekend and evening drives. A well specced c4s is comming out at 80k and I personally think the gt3 sounds a far better proposition both financially and obviously driver appeal.

No Brainer Bax, 85K simple have the best of both World's

£40K MK1 GT3

£40-45k 964RS Clubsport

Both great build and particularly the RS depreciation proof.....

Within two years of owning the new car you will have the residual of only one of the above fact....

Are you really considering drinking 1988 Petrus, its far too young, maybe a 1982 if you have to but really you should still be on the 1961s[:)]

Tim

I would like to take issue with the Petrus analogy. Not tracking a Porsche is not like looking at a desirable bottle of wine and not drinking it, it is like going out on a date with a gorgeous, unfufilled girl only to take a vow of chastity and then go home early.
I love my 997 C2S and try to look after it well but it has been on the track 4 times this year with two more to go. I will be at Brands and if you would like to bring your Petrus I would be pleased to help out at the end of the day to see how the tracking and drinking analogies work. I assume their will be no girls there!!
