I just been told off by a 944 cab owner for having my roof still powered??????? don't you know they are very expensive to fix and so easy to break, disconect it now and use it as a manual!!

what's he on about I don't know every thing about Porsches but I certainly have an idea or two about different models and unreliable 944 cab roofs is not on my mental list

well any one?????? mine touch wood works fine

BTW I am still looking to be able to operate the roof with the engine running ?? how to I deactivate the thing as it only works when the car is turned off.. very anoying!!

Never heard that before mine is powered as well. I guess the engine off thing is because the roof isnt clever enough to know if you are stationary or moving and they want to ensure you are parked. I usually use the tonneau cover on the lowered roof so have to get out anyway ;)

Rubbish. [:D]

If it breaks, and it's too expensive to fix, that's one thing. Deliberately breaking it seems crazy. I've very rarely heard of problems, and never that it was expensive to repair.

Poppycock ! springs to mind but I have an idea though. They should have told you to not drive the car at all, that way you definately wouldnt risk emptying the fuel tank or wearing your tyres out. Don't carry passengers either because the selfish swines will wear out your front nearside seat [:D]

On a serious note, looking at it another way , if your car is stored either outside or in a non attached & pretty cold , damp garage like most of us then any electro-mechanical item left unused for long periods risks seizing or suffering other damage. As a result and like the rest of a 944 , I would actively encourage you to use it regularly not disconnect it.

Made me smile anyway.

Cheers

Yeah. They're a bunch of hassle these 944's. Always breaking and going wrong. Much more grief than they are worth.

Why not sell it and buy yourself a nice reliable Ford Fiesta instead?

Oli.

Edited to add some smileys, as it sounded a bit harsh without them. I can't decide which smiley is the most appropriate so I'll just put 'em all in.

First time I have heard that one :ROFLMAO: I'd ignore it

There is a mod to allow the roof to operate with the engine running but I don't know the specifics, it's probably relay or fuse related. Why not call your local Indie and see if its a service they offer (or know about [&:] )

A 944 Cab owner from R24 (Cambs) recently had her car modified by Auto2000, nr. Bedford,so that the roof would operate with the engine running. If they are local to you, it may be worth giving them a call.

The 993 roof is designed to operate with the engine running or off, but the hand-brake must be on. I tend to have the engine running to reduce battery drain and always pause during the lowering to ensure that the window 'folds' nicely without any creases. The window on the 944 is smaller so potential creasing may not be a problem.

100% why I want to have the engine running to power the battery for the roof

I am sure there is a way to do your self I would have thought it would have been a issue that has cropped up before and some one had posted it on the net I am supprised..

Ref that Artical it was about the metal frame next to the glass on that A pillar type area that they are on about it was on Pelican Parts forum in the US. I can't think that the European cars are differnet to the US cars anyway they say the parts costs $1200 to replace and you need two I am sure if that was the case there is milage in some one making a more beefed up one and selling them ....... anyway I have a motto now ( The internet full of content, most of which is B*****s )

Too true. There is plenty of nonsense out there. I think ebay needs a feature for you to be able to post critique about peoples descriptions and asking prices as there are alot of untruth's on peoples descriptions and unreasonable expectations for what people think their stuff is worth.

I don't know what this guys problem is - if there is a problem with the powered roof then why can't you make it manual when and if it breaks? I don't see the point or need to convert it to manual before it breaks! And in anycase, if it does break, as expensive as it may be to fix you might be willing to pay the repair costs.

There is a mod to do for lowering the roof with the engine running. Its to do with the relay. Youve got to blank one of the pins off [insulation tape]., or break the pin off.
Sorry cant remember which pin it was , try looking on 968forums [a US website]...Theyve done it lots of times.
I did it on my 968 cabrio + it worked fine for years.
You cant lower the roof with the car moving though.
I think the problem with the 944/968 soft top is the main bow / uprights , they have a tendancy to snap. I had one break on my car, but as i was having a new roof it didnt realy matter. [Also i was lucky enough to find a used roof frame with a usable main upright...]
Only snag is they dont come cheep.....£££££££££££
Nore do the seals....[8|][8|]

is how I understand it

That is the main upright.
Well its a picture of the seal. As the alloy bracket is behing that.
I know i have a few pics of my cabrio roof frame + assosiated bits ,,, somewhere. If i get time later ill post some up...

I looked at our cab after this and found a repair on the drivers side with some screws so it would seam ours may have had a repair or it's factory but I am thinking not.. it works and works well..
