Cab Rear Screen

Evening chaps

I have just acquired a project cab, S2. The rear screen is sliced open where some bampot broke into it.[:(]

Couple of questions. How easy is it to replace? Does the section with the window detach from rest of roof? And does anybody have one/know where to get one? The car wasn't expensive and I want to keep costs to a minimum. Might keep, might move on, who knows!

Cheers

Sorry I can't answer the roof questions Stuart but we need photos of the car! I know that Gordon (turbo cab that Al looked after) picked up a new roof just this year.

There will be no photos until I have sorted out the bizarre fog light mod and the hideous high level brake light attached to the boot and had the rear quarter painted and the window fixed! It has 968 Side Skirts on it which it actually suits, is on 18" rims, maybe GT3 ones, not sure, and has linen sports seats. It is silvery blue with a black hood. The roof is actually really good except the trashed rear window which is a shame.

Hi
Roof is in 2 parts top and rear and headliner if fitted. to get the rear off you will have to dismantle the front partly also ( in the middle) - not hard but fiddly - I then took my window to trimania in Reading and he fitted a new one for about 70 cash that was 6 years ago .... thats all i remember for now. I still got a new roof in the garage ( not fitted yet).

Thanks for that! I think I need to get the roof separated then and get it to someone who can fit a new screen. Seems like the most cost effective option as the roof is in good order except the screen!

Give these guys a bell as they seems they are offering a real nice product http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-944-and-968-1989-1995-Soft-Top-convertible-car-hood-/271330888728?_trksid=p2054897.l4275
Ask them if they can fit a new screen ? Looking at the roof it seems to be sew in , they would have to pick the old screen out and sew the new one in ? If the roof looks worn ? You might be better off having a new one fitted unless
you yourself can remove it take it to the roof people and refit the roof afterwards . Labour intensive .
You should upload pictures before and after ;) all part of the fun .
Best of luck with your project .

I understand that removing and re-fitting the roof of a 968 cab - probably very similar to a 944S2 - is about 6 hours work, plus you have to be very careful not to damage any of the workings as parts are somewhere between rare and NLA - and expensive! I investigated having the roof of my cab replaced by Polyfacto near Hailsham - little change from £1k!

I've also heard that, even though a new screen can be sewn in, it's questionable whether or not it would be waterproof - your best bet might be to try for a new rear section. I think I've seen them listed on Ebay from a US outfit.

The rear window was replaced on my cab before I owned it, unfortunately I have no details, but it doesn't leak.

Well I have the car now, and the guy has supplied a bit of Perspex cut to shape for a new window. Just need to find someone to unpick the old one and stitch in a new one. Still not seen the car in daylight, looks like the roof is not sealing very well against the windscreen or the side windows. Will need a play about in the daylight I think to see what is happening.

I also need a new wiper/indicator stalk if anyone has one, a boot lock mech and possibly a handbrake lever as the button won't pop out any more. Any bits or advice welcome!

Hi Stuart,

FYI, the rear window in my S2 cab is a soft "polythene" type - not perspex which I believe is rigid.

Not sure how a rigid window will impact the folding of the hood.

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian

It may not be Perspex. It is rolled up at present and seems to be very similar to the original window to touch/feel. My bad!
