Cable snapped under roof

Afternoon all,

My first ever post on here so hello all.

As always with first post's I have a question to ask! I bought myself a Boxster S at the beginning of December. A 2003 facelift in Midnight blue with metropole interior and being my first Porsche I'm loving every minute of it. In the sunshine today I've had a bit of a clean inside and thought I'd see what's visible with the hood half open. All pretty uninteresting but I noticed a cable that appears to have snapped in half on the drivers side. It's under the roof in the corner but a bit hard to describe so I've attached a photo (if it works!). Is anyone able to tell me what this is and do I need to get it fixed? The top appears to go up and down no problem so I'm hoping it's nothing major. Fingers crossed the attachment works!

Thanks in advance.

Bought my boxster in September and drove home to fing the string flapping in the wind, as had snaped in the middle. Booked into JCT but they had not ordered the part so wasted trip. Waiting to take to supplying dealer when I have the time. Not a problem roof works fine, but must get repaired before warrantee runs out, as the extended one I am sure will not cover this item.

Thanks. I get the impression from Tool Pants response that this is something I can do myself which is good as I don't have any warranty. I don't suppose anyone can advise the part number and possibly has instructions???

Thanks again.

(If it's the one I'm thinking) There is one each side, and you should be able to see where it threads through from the matching one on the other side.

I understand from the guy at JCT they use a welding rod to thread the cord thro, give them a ring they have the cord for mine in stock as it arrived 2 days after my car was booked in. I certainly will need it, as would sooner go to the dentist than go back to those to**ers[]

This has happened to my Boxster just recently but understand that the Part No for a 'Tension Rope' (the short cables sheathed in black plastic with ballclips at either end) is 986.561.191.02

As a footnote to my earlier post, I just replaced the broken right-hand side hood tension cable (£20 by post from Dick Lovett Swindon). The good news is that it takes less than ten minutes to do the job - without any tools either. However, I did notice that the new cable does not come with the small locating clip that attaches to the top balljoint - see pic.

If you do need to replace one of your cables, bear in mind that you'll need to remove this little clip carefully and retain it for use with the new cable. B.
