cabrio hood

hello all, where is the best priced quality hood available from, one of my car is looking tatty so I would like a new top. Thank you

The 944 cab I'm selling (see: members for sale) has a lovely hood... and you get a free 944 cab thrown into the deal [:D]

I have surfed around, and for my area I found the Car Hood Warehouse, right opposite Chessington World of Adventure in Surrey to suit my needs best. The 944 is one of the few hoods that they won't work on with a mobile unit. It is a long job. I sat using free wi-fi from 07:40 until 14:55 at which time the hood was finished. I was lucky the framework under the canvas was in good condition, they said that often when they take the cover off some of the metal parts are corroded. Hood plus fitting £993. It is so nice to have a rear window that can actually be seen through.

That's a very good price, as well as being good quality. Southbound used to be the default place to send people, but they aren't listing 944 hoods any more. I'm sure they could do it, but I'd imagine the price would be more "special order" now!

Odd, as I'd have thought there were more 944 cabs around than the 964 or 993 they still stock? Or am I completely wrong there?

The best value soft tops anywhere seem to be made by Jack Smith in Swansea. Its the default answer to the question for an MX-5 owner. Whether they offer a 944 hood I cant say, but if they do then a mohair replacement will be cheaper there than anywhere else.

If you fancy tacking the job your self , or know a car seat upholsterer (most will fit them ) I found these guys state side & will ship to us .. :)

I would agree jack smiths in Swansea will be a top job at the cheapest price I'm sure they will do a 944 if you have the old roof to make template from, as they make everything they fit on site.

That's $395, but it's plus UK import duties etc. Given that John's took about 6 hours to fit, and wasn't a bad frame underneath, I'd want to do some maths.

Take his £993, less VAT, and you get £828. Assume £60 per hour, halfway between backstreet and specialist in the home counties, and 6 hours is £360. That leaves £468 for the hood, which isn't going to be miles off one from the states.

Given the problems with trying to deal with mistakes, parts damaged in transit, all the things that can go wrong with anything you order online, I'd rather stay UK if possible. If you're going to ask someone to fit it, then I'd be wary of supplying my own parts if it's a job that could get very labour-intensive.

+1 on what Paul said above. A good friend, well versed in Model T's, bought (in USA while over there) a complete hood and interior kit for the 2 seater he was building, took the car to Polyfacto in Hailsham (good people!!) who found the whole kit unusable, they had to fabricate the whole lot from scratch (and made a superb job of it).
