CABRIOLET ROOF MOTORS

My question is of the "how long is a piece of string" variety................

On my cabriolet, the motor(s) for raising/lowering the roof are a bit noisy - should they be relatively quiet???

James,

I think you need to establish a STANDARD. A possible starting point might be

1) how far away can you stand and still hear the roof mechanism during a quiet time.

2) get a noise meter and check (at a track day or whatever).

How long does it take to operate the hood after undoing the latches.

Mine 'whirr' quite loudly but they don't make any nasty noises. IIRC they are in the side panel behind the front seats so there isn't much between them and your ears.

Thanks, that's helpful. since mine don't make any "nasty" noises either - they're just a wee bit loud. Probably best I find another and compare.............

Yes.......mine whirr as well quite loud........

I think it must be the norm for these motors.

In my experience, they do wirrrr a bit, but so long as there are no scraping or crunching noises, there is no problem.

If you do get a chance, it is worth greasing the mechanism which you can access by removing the strip inside the door and the 2 screws slightly to the side of the strip and the single screw at the top which is exposed when you put the seat back down.

I can't take photos as I haven't got the car anymore, but it is fairly straight forward.

Phil

Yes it's a very noisy motor on the cabriolet, which is a shame for such an otherwise graceful looking car.
Am I right in thinking that the electric roof was an optional extra as I have seen a few people pulling up the roof by hand?

I believe all UK cars had the elctric roof but itwas not standard in all markets.

A LHD cab must be an horrific car to drive in the UK though - impossible to get onto a roundabout safely with the roof up.

Thanks, Phil, good suggestion.

Your mind and mine seem to run in parallel................I am in the process of changing the 944 for a 3.2 Carrera.

I'm new to the forum and already think it's a great institution (if that's the right word).
