Caliper discs missing?

Chaps, i've just got my passenger rear caliper off to try and see what's causing the knocking sound when i apply my brakes.
The pads have loads of wear left and and they appear to sit very nice and snug within the caliper itself.On one of the four pistons there is a round disk that fits between the pad and the piston itself - according to the PET cd there should be 4 of these disks - is this 4 disks in total for the four calipers (1 per caliper) or 1 for each of the 4 pistons in each caliper.Any ideas?
