Caliper Refurb

Hi

Probably a familiar story - Had the car since January, an inspection of my calipers a couple of months ago confirmed my fears. They looked really shot. Infact so shot that replacing the pads and worn discs was not an option.
Bleed Nipples seized, hard lines in poor state and certainly seized to the hoses... hoses likely seized to to the brake lines.. Plates lifting, discs unevenly worn.. Looked to me like the calipers may not have been properly bled on both sides of each caliper for some time.. Nightmare. On top of that the coating was flaking and generally they looked a bit rubbish once the wheels were off.
Incidentally .. they still worked surprisingly well considering.

So.. I cut them all off through the hard lines. Ordered new hard lines, braided hoses etc. I just could not face battling with 4 calipers, 8 plates, 16 pistons , 16 bleed nipples, 16 sized plate screws, prep, paint etc etc .. so after a quick check on line to weigh up refurbishment vs replacement I decided to take a gamble on porschecalipers.co.uk.

The jist of my post is.. if you have time to wait then I can definitely recommend them (Well him actually). The calipers came back looking fantastic, with a high quality powder coat finish and clearcoated decals. They were obviously clean as I got no debris out when bleeding. It was not cheap, at £675 for the four of them, but I think worth it considering the quality of the finish . Also the website states a 2 week turn around but in reality this was more like 5 weeks, and a little frustrating- though I am in the western Isles.

The rest of the rebuild went fine, I had to cut some of the lines upstream of the flexible hoses and put a socket on them, but these were fairly easily replaced with new Cunifer lines. (apart from access obviously - I don't have the smallest hands.)

The last part of the job was the most satisfying having never used a pressure bleeder before - why have I waited so long to get one of these !!! I have to say I was dreading trying to bleed the whole system, but using the pressure bleeder, its easy, its clean and you know you are doing a right, thorough job. I will definitely be doing a flush on a regular basis to try and keep my 'new' calipers in the best possible condition.

Needless to say, the brakes are transformed and I now know what 964 brakes are supposed to feel like. They were a little squeaky to start with, but after some breaking in and hose off they seem to have come good.

Another small, expensive step towards getting my car to how I want it.

I used OEM discs, Redstuff pads, Porsche fluid (3 full tins in all -maybe a litre each?), Goodrich braided S/S hoses, CuNi certified brake line off ebay, Sealy pressure bleeder, New Porsche hard lines from hose to calipers. Jacked car onto stands and worked on all four corners together.

All of the above applies to C2 Obviously ('93).. I know nothing about bleeding C4's with Bosch Hammers.

Thats about it I think.

Cheers

Chris
