Caliper repair/refurbishment

The calipers are off but I'm having trouble getting the plates off that the pads slide on. Thre's an Allen screw that holds the plate in place but it's solid. Does anyone know of a brake specialist who could replace the plates near to Portsmouth? Or am I looking at replacements (breakers of course!)?

Thanks Diver944 - do you have any contact details? I think the term for the problem I have is 'Caliper plate lift'. I could mail them to a specialist elsewhere if any one has any recommendations.

Jon Mitchell in Bournemouth would be the closest that I know

I had the same problem replacing mine. I finally welded a larger bolt on top of the one stuck in the caliper, it then was very easy to undo as the heat did it's thing and was much easier to undo with a ring spanner. The only thing is you have to weld it on at an angle that you can turn (hard to describe but obvious when you are looking at it) If you haven't got a welder try and find a shop who will do it as it will cost very little and it works. Good luck.

I think Promax offer an exchange service on calipers where you get a nice pair of refurbed calipers in exchange for your used ones. Not sure how cost effective this service is compared to refurbing the things yourself.
