Calling 968 experts

I am in the market for a 968 or a 944 Turbo.

Having had a couple of 944's I know the cars fairly well but am less familiar with the 968. What weaknesses should a pontential buyer look. For example I know the 944 S2 and turbo are prone to rust in the sill and wheel arch areas. Are the 968's prone to rust anywhere in particular. Does the engine and gearbox have any weaknesses. What are the potential big bills ?

Thanks

Jim.
I suggest you take a visit to the Hartech website.

Theres a great buyers guide to download + read at your leasure.
Also another good reference is Jackals site. With great pictoral guides..

Scroll down to the 968 section + enjoy the read...

Ide paricularly mention the cam chain + cam sprocket area. This can + IS a costly repair if needed. Make sure the car you are looking at has recently had these areas looked at or replaced...NOT just the cam belts...
Rust doesnt seem to be an issue ,,, yet, but if it were me ide be looking at the area around the rear torsion tube mounts. ie the rear sill area. like in the 944,s...
The fuel pipe "corrosion" issues are now begging to catch out a few owners too...
There are lots of small bits that may or may not need checking, [if they all need attending to the costs mount up.££££££],,,,but ide be sat at the pc for a long time if i listed them all...
Just remember your looking at a car thats likely to be around 15 years old....

Thanks Dave

I've been to look at my first 968 today, a lux, and was tempted to buy it, but didn't because it was the first one I'd looked at. Its in our neck of the woods at Wheelton and advertised on e-bay. Its mechanically good with one of the best histories I've seen, however its solid black and had a crap partial respray although no sign of rot or accident damage. Interior is good with 993 style seats. I think I could get a big discount off the 8k asking price.

Any thoughts

Interesting, as you're comparing oranges with cheese here. 968 is a great step up from (or alternative to) a 944 S2, but the 944 turbo, with a few cheap modern modifications, is a very different car. What's the thinking?

You just missed one of the best deals on a really decent 944 turbo for under £4K, as well!

don't let the 944 crew dissuade you from a 968 Jim [;)]

only kidding, both really are great cars and you are in exactly the same boat I was about 10 years ago, having had a succession of 944s and trying to decide between a Turbo or go to a 968, the looks of the 968 made the final percentage of the decision for me.
Over the years the simplicity of the 968 has proven to be a benefit meaning I can do most of the work myself, anything I can't do I leave to Hartech who are mentioned above.

One thing I would be wary of is cars that have been played with a bit too much, there are a few cars on the market at the moment which I know are either listed on the insurance category database or have been unsuccessfully 'fettled', engine mods etc..
Don't fall for one of these, make sure that you do all the checks, if it's a 968 that you are leaning towards let me know and I'll do some research for you on that car.

Stu, Thats a very interesting comment, would you please enlighten all of us about the unsuccessful engine mods? Most of the cars that have been "modded" have been widely discussed on here and the general opinion is depending on what you want out of the car, to a degree all have been succesful.

Hi all

Yes my new steed is a 968 sport. It came from Scarborough and has been in North Yorkshire for a while and been looked after by specialist cars in Malton for the last 10 years. As far as I'm aware it is standard apart from some extra holes in the air box. Its second owner was from Singleton in Lancashire so it has been owned by someone from "Gods" county before !
