Calliper Identification

Hi all,

I have a small crack in my front O/S calliper where the brake pipe joins it so have been looking for a replacement. I purchased a spare but it is different to mine. Specifically, the PORSCHE letters are cast into it rather than being painted/vinyl letters like my original is. Mine is a 1991 S2, but in it's 31 years it's not beyond comprehension that these have been altered. So, which is the correct one and does anyone know if they have different part numbers?

The later cars did not have the cast letters - I think my 90 coupe had cast letters on the front and smooth rears (front calipers are larger now), I think they might be smooth on both on my 91. I am fairly certain pistonsand other dims are the same, not sure about part numbers,

Thanks Tony, as I suspected, more of an aesthetic change before the 968 came out I guess.

The search continues if anyone has one kicking around?!

My rear calipers are cast letters, and they were replaced with new ones about 15-20 years ago by a previous owner. The receipt shows they were special order parts (from OPC) supplied and fitted by Kwik Fit! Imagine asking Kwik Fit to supply and fit your 944 with a pair of new rear calipers today!

My fronts were also cast letters, black calipers. I've since replaced these with a pair of smooth 993 items that only needed the bolt collars machined back to flush to fit properly on my radial M030 set-up. These are red with white PORSCHE transfers. The decals never last and cast letters are definitely my preference. Reminds me I might get them done again when I'm at the decal shop on Saturday!

I'm sure the S2 front and rear calipers are the same size but the fronts have larger pistons. Same pads though. I did have a front and rear caliper spare a while back but sadly I sold them on.

I have cast letters front and rear on my 89T with M030 option. Although this page doesn't refer to styling, it's interesting re brake specs http://www.cannell.co.uk/images/944%20Technical.htm There was an article on 944 brakes on Design911 https://www.design911.co.uk/blog/top-porsche-944-brake-upgrades "Fun little fact, the Brembo four-pot brake calipers of the MO30 option are also the same calipers used on the Lamborghini Diablo"
I saw an ad this week on FB for BCS, so I got an estimate to refurb inc paint my 4 calipers - £953!!! The refurb was only £360, which seemed reasonable, but the paint job was £330 and even worse it was £240 to "flat back and lacquer" the raised logo!

Ferrari 355s use the same M030 front callipers, they buy our brake discs and pads as F tax is even higher than P tax it seems.

I’m pretty certain that the callipers are the same just the transition from cast letters to the more modern style of smooth with the decals.

My '89 S2 originally had the cast letters and I replaced them with later smooth callipers with the stickers when they needed refurbing. The important thing is the internal piston sizes are the same. IIRC its 36mm and 40mm for the front but please double check

Pretty sure all 968’s came with smooth callipers, having rebuilt a set of M030 off a 968 they were smooth as well
