I've been advised to replace the cam chain and guides on my 76K mile S2. To my knoweledge it hasn't been changed although the belt has. Has anybody got any veiws on wether this is necessary as I dont want to spend 250 quid for nothing.

Definately....Get the job done.....

You dont want to be spending on a top end re-build now do you.???????

If the chain + or "slippers" let go itl cost a LOT more than £250......

Prevention is better than cure....[;)][;)][;)]

Best I get it done then...

No new shoes again this month Kids but we'll get you some fresh newspaper to shove in the holes.

Yes , Yes and Yes, the only people who woudnt do it are the one's who carnt afford the £250 and therefore shoudnt be running a Porsche as if they fail ££££££

You would be well advised to check the teeth on the cams as well. If the cam chain is worn then the parts it wears against may also be worn.

I had to replace both cams on my old S2 when I replaced the chain.

££££Kerching!

At 75 thousand the chain will be starting to 'stretch' and run out of pitch, accelerating the wear on the sprockets. Catch it early. When I bought my 944s in 1994 the chain had just been done, at 55,000 miles. Back then the job cost £177 plus vat including parts, so £250 all in sounds reasonable. FYI a top end rebuild starts at about a grand depending on how many valves you bend. If one of them lets go and wrecks a piston, my god!

That sounds like it might be right (it will be more if anything) but remember that if you need a rebuild because the chain has failed then you will have to add a couple of cam shafts plus a chain and tensioners to the grand as it will be a hell of a mess in there. Possibly best to assume £3k with all the labour to be safe.
