help need to hire a tool to set up cam's, ive got a 87 944 s 16v.i live in the wirral, many thank's ian.

Hi Ian, what tool do you need? If you're timing in the cams I'm not sure you need any special tooling at all.

I've only done it on an S2, but all I needed was a dti and a magnetic stand, about £15 all in from machine mart. Obviously as the head is ally the magnetic bit is no use but there is a convenient thread that can be used to mount the stand, photo should be attached if I've pressed the right buttons.

ive been told i need to lock down cam's to set belts and timing out,its had a new head on it but needs timing up.any clues were i can hire it not paying £300 to buy it.

The manual says that you need a special tool to tension the belts although I've never used one and have got away with it so far (either by luck or judgement). I think you can borrow one from the club if you're a member.

You won't need to lock the cams to time them in or put the belts on. As I said, you can time the cams in with a DTI (in fact that's the way the manual advises, no special tools mentioned) as per the pic.

I've replaced the head on an S2 and set cam timing, belts etc from scratch with no special tools so other than the belt tension tool I'm not sure what else you think you need...

http://www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm has links to the factory manuals which are excellent.
