Be doing getting these jobs done when my mot is due in may,,
all good for 4 years then,,,,jasonp

Jason,

Looks expensive. A quick look at Design911 shows water pumps at £150 and a complete belt kit for a little over £200.

Worth checking Promax as well although their web site is closed at the mo.

My chaps said it’s important to get quality belts like contitech and a Gates water pump if possible and not a cheapie,,, jasonp

Cheers Paul,,,
booked her in for early feb,,,they said its cheaper to buy parts individually then those kits and no cheap water pumps,,,
also have them do the front oil seals if needed,,,power steering belt and fluids,,,small service,,,,,mot
Have a bit more piece of mind with those big jobs sorted,,,,
not very much mileage since the last belt change,,, jasonp

Gates Belts were OEM, I have contis and they whine like hell if they are just a fraction tight, gates belts next year for me

one of the two spare belts i have is a old genuine one, says made in Scotland on the box, can only be gates.

Pumps can be rebuilt if they have metal impellors,

costs about £100 plus post, with lifetime warranty,

the owner Paul is a really nice fella, been refurbing pumps for about 40 years

The last set of belts and rollers I bought were from Promax, from memory at least one of the belts was a Conti. I haven't heard much lately about the uprated belt Gates sell. Years ago when I changed the cam belt on my V6 Audi the only water pump available was on exchange from Audi, so they were obviously rebuilding them.

Thanks Martin and Paul,,
Much appreciated,,,jasonp

Conti belts are the commonly available ones in the UK and I use them all the time (I think the last three sets have been contis) and have never had a problem. The 944 and 968 boys across the Atlantic say that they are inferior and stretch but can never back this up with evidence when asked - I think it's a bit of urban folklore which has grown from one or two isolated incidents.

Martin, thanks for the info about the water pump rebuilders - I've been meaning to ask you for that for a while! I have an old water pump (with metal impellor) in my workshop and need to change the one on my S2 this summer.

Jason,

Have a good look at those seals and leave them well alone if they aren't leaking. Changing them is a chore and you risk introducing a leak with new parts. Only change them if it's necessary.

So more prudent to go with Gates
Belts,,,,
Cheers .....jasonp

I worked for Gates for 14 years, though not at Dumfries where the belts are produced. The Gates family transferred their majority holding years ago, and things changed.... I wouldn't attach too much importance to the Gates name.

As you know i wont be touching her and they will only change if really needed,,,
My chaps been using contis for years but will happily get Gates belts if i decide although they have never had a problem with conti belts for customers and there own cars,
,
I have a nice clean white sheet thingy on the floor in my garage and placed exactly where any oil leaks would show ,,,,
totally no leaks,,,,,
Thought that was a good idea in case of any 911 arrivals in the future [;)] lol,,,,,jasonp

Really? Gosh, I didn't know that. There clearly wasn't as much money in Aussie V8's as they had hoped. That's the end of an era.

Jason - good. Although you probably want to check on the inside of the covers on the front of the engine to be totally sure.
