Camera Locators

I have just taken delivery of a Gen 2 Ruby Red Targa 4 (photos to follow as soon as the sun shines).
Initial impressions are that it's going to be great fun but I do need to keep my license!
I currently have a Road Angel in the M5 which works well, but it's a bit bulky and I do forget to update it regularly.
It's a shame that this facility is not embedded in the PCM system so I have to get something fitted.
Has anybody got any recomendations? I guess I'll be particularly glad to hear of any experience of the new kit which includes a GSM chip so gets updates automatically?
Thanks
Keith

Hi Keith, congrats on the new car - PDK?
I use a Pogo Alert which seems to do the job ok and is fairly compact. Doesn't have auto update though - have to connect to the computer periodically.
Enjoy the car![;)]

I nearly bought a Pogo but was told by Halfords that they had a lot returned. I have a RoadAngel Pro which is great. I like it partly because it has a 7 hr battery, thus no wires. In a Porsche that is important. The cheaper version also has laser, but I am not sure how good that is.

Nothing wrong with Road Angel

Just remember to update[:D]

I have a Road Angel plus but I find the best method of avoiding speeding tickets is PARANOIA!

Watching out for Police and cameras constantly means you are more aware of the traffic around you anyway and as long as you aren't doing crazy inappropriate speeds means you are actually a safer driver.

This was shown of fifth gear the other day:

Did they say why, Derek? Haven't had any trouble with mine.
Why no wires also? (other than cosmetic)

I have the Road Angel pro connected. The battery option is great and i really like the fact that it is constantly updated so i don't have to worry about it, but that doesn't always mean its correct!

I would rather not have something stuck to the windscreen, but i think i would rather get some help to protect my licence than worry too much about asthetics. Having come up through the Road Angel ranks i can't comment on other makes, but i do think the road angel does what it says on the tin.

I have looked into this a lot, I was tempted by the Pogo alert (there is a guy on Piston Heads who pushes them hard but not sure if cos he rates them or sells them) but it does not have live updates on sites there the cameras are that day and you have to use a power lead.

I am going to buy one in the next few days as off the west country next month and dont know the roads down there at all.

The Road Angle Connected looks the way to go as it has the button you push if you seen a camera van and it alerts everyone in the area with the same unit by the SMS mobile phone chip inside it. To those that already have one of these can they say if this aspects really works and if it is of use as to me this looks like the biggest plus point.??

There is a Coyotte unit which is big in France but is new here. It has the same function but don't think it is widely used here therefore making it not as effective as the RA Connected.

I thought you got slammed in jail if the French police caught you with a safety camera warning device.

As for lack of wires, yes I prefer an uncluttered dash.

As for awareness, I totally agree. Be aware of where the Police will position their equipment. Bridges over motorways are favourite as are laybys just inside a speed limit. They rarely place them just before the speed limit runs out. Keep your eys also open for unmarked cars. Finally, the only completely safe method to protect your licence is not to speed. That is why the Club's trip to the Isle of Man is so great. NO SPEED LIMITS & great roads.

Some useful overviews via following link - scroll down for others also in right hand corner. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/224724/novus_gps_rider.html GTPORSCHE Nov. edition also had a review of "six of the best" which included Road Angel and Novus Rider. I like the simplicity of the Rider (manual updates only btw) "" big plus in my view is that it sits inside the oddments tray (in front of gearstick) so is totally unobtrusive.

i have a Road angel Pro connected which has a sim card.... it updates every 2 mins....its very good!!

users can press a button when the see a patrol car and it sends it out to everyone..so you even know where the police hang out too bridges slip roads etc

Thanks everybody - this will give me some ammo when I talk to the guys who will fit the kit (I want to avoid dangly wires and suckers on the windscreen)
As the sun's shining I'll do some photos of the car later and work out how to post them to the site.
Have a good day.

BTW, why does it say "Non Member" after my name?
