Can anyone recommend direct replacement front door speakers

I took one of my door panels off today to investigate a knackered window motor, noticed that the lower speaker was torn slightly, I've been planning on changing the speakers anyway as they sound terrible.

Having looked at several websites I see that changing the woofer would be easy but the tweeter part of the components is more of a problem as all the aftermarket tweeters seem to be much smaller than the standard one fitted, I'm looking for direct replacement.

Has anyone recently done this and if so, where did you get them?

One option I think would be to fit co-axial speakers as a replacement for the woofer and just disconnect the tweeter but keep it installed for a standard look, also I'm looking to change the rear speakers while I'm at it, any advice on these too would be appreciated, thanks

If you go with a coaxial unplugging the tweeter isnt enough you need to remove the crossover tucked in a secret compartment forward of the door pocket unde the handle for which you need to strip the door panel off. Otherwise it sound nasty.

I cant remember which speakers i went with in the end but if you take the old speaker and the grill with you to the shop you just need to try out all the different speakers that are close in size, i think i still had to trim down the mounting tabs on the new speakers, speakers from different makers vary slightly in size and none are exactly the same as the factory fit but you can get close enough. Unless you're a proper audiophile, pretty much anything will sound better than worn out factory ones.

Hi thanks Alex, Yeh I know about the crossover, if I went down the co-axial route was planning on running a wire to by-pass the crossover, Discovered the crossover box today taking the door cards off, it's rattling quite badly so is probably knackered anyway.

Would still rather have direct replacements for both speakers with a new crossover, happy to file tabs down to make a speaker fit but a new tweeter half the size of the origional which they all seem to be wouldn't fit, think a drive to a car audio shop is in order

The crossover wiring is like a modular addition to the factory wiring that just unplugs so you can use factory connectors onto the coaxial which I found really pleasing for some reason. Like 20 years ago someone had thought of exactly this situation and made my life easy, which is pretty much the oposite of most jobs on these cars.

Yeah i think it was the hassle of getting tweeters to fit that put me off component speakers.

I the end I gave up trying to figure out what would work based on info off the net so I ended annoying the staff at the local halfords but hey, there's no substitute for getting a few different options out of their boxes to see what will a) work and b)you like the look of.

Everyone also says to bolt the front speakers directly onto the door frame thingy. I think originally they are bolted on to the door card. Bolting them to the frame helps with sound quality. Good luck - I need to do the same so if you succeed let us know part numbers. I heard another guy went to Sextons (wandsworth branch) and they did it all for him.

Hi Gaz,

Can you tell me do the original speaker covers fit over the rear speakers you recommended? I'm looking for a standard look, thanks.

When I fit the speakers I'll post how to do it with some pics, as well as to how to replace the window motor for those who want to attempt to do the same, I would imagine I'm not the only one with 21 year old speakers on their last legs!!
