Can I reduce my offsets?

OK, I'm gonna throw this one out there at the risk of sounding stupid but...
I'm struggling to find someone who'd like to sell me there split rims with a more suitable offset than my current Speedlines, so... I was wondering if it would be possible to machine a few mm off the mounting face of the wheels to effectively reduce the offset a little?

Well, I spoke to a chap at Image wheels (they make split-rim and billet alloys), and he seems to think I wont have any problems taking 5mm off the monuting face. I suppose this would theoretically increase my offset by 5mm to 52mm? That's FS isn't it? Anybody any suggestions for helpful machinists?

It all depends how thick the alloy is between the bottom of the bolt holes and the back of the wheel. It is this metal holding your wheel to the hub and obviously there is a minimum thickness you would want for safety reasons []

You really need to speak to a bona fide wheel expert before thinning the back of the wheel face, but in the interests of science I just measured the thickness on my spare track wheels and they were only 8mm thick. A frighteningly thin piece of metal in my view and I wish I hadn't done it now [8|]

What offset do you run at the moment?

As Paul suggests - the bolt seats are designed to suit the offset you have at the moment. Removing material from the mounting face will reduce the thickness between the bolt seat face and the hub mounting face too ~ there may be some leeway but I'd want someone in the business to confirm that before I machined them!.

Please no. Please make this madness stop now.
